 Princess Cut: Table / Depth?

I was told by my local jeweler that the range I should look for in a Princess cut is Table: 75%-82% and Depth: 68%-74.3%.

Did she just pull this number out of the air, or is there some sort of "standard" Table/Depth I should be shooting for?? (for the best cut princess)

I'm so new to this and I would hate to think someone is purposely trying to steer me wrong, just to make a sale.

Thanks for any input!

-Mojo

Well, from my LIMITED knowledge, both #'s seem high. the depth being more reasonable than the table, which seems very much on the high side. I tihnk its best left to the experts but thats just my input. im sure you have seen it before but if not.....

Oh my goodness, thank-you for that link...
Wow, I'm so disappointed in the advice I was given...yet I'm sure any jeweler can $mell my inexperience from a mile away.

Thanks Trizanne!  (LOVE this site)
Can anyone else weigh-in on this?

There has been much discussion recently about princess cut grading. Very few of the stones cut in the past will get the top grades and cutters will need to think long and hard about cutting for weight or cutting for performance. In the past it's been "cut for weight and call it Ideal". When the AGS actually holds its Ideal standards up and stones get measured against it the bluff will be called.

the very latest from those working on producing princess for the soon to be released AGS system is that there is no real value in using table and depth % since there are so many variables.

Even if you have crown and pavilion data you can end up with this much deviation:

You can however use an ideal-scope to assess various diamonds light return.

hi everyone,

garry, i am a little confused about the 2 idealscope images.  could you explain them a little better please... are both these stones roughly the same in terms of table/depth but the difference is the performance on the IS? maybe i missed the point and it went over my head, thanks

jason

if you break your bones come to me I will fix you right up!

Okay...let's just cut to the chase...if there is no real value in using table/depth % when purchasing a princess, what should I be most concerned with?

I just want a darn good diamond...the kind of cut that Gary H would be proud to see me purchase.  (My girlfriend will be happy with any diamond I get her, but I'll sleep better knowing that I found an excellent cut with great color.)

Do most online vendors listed on PS use the Ideal Scope?  Budget is 8k for the stone.  Thanks in advance!

What are your requirements as to colour, clarity and size? What time-frame are you looking at?

Hi Paul,

I wold like to buy the stone in the next week or two...but I've "bought" some time, so I could wait longer to get the perfect stone.

I'd like to stay around 1.0, Color: D-F, VS1-SI1

Thanks!

With that budget, you can even go to the upcoming AGS-0 or 1. The only problem is that you can have the stone, but the printed grading report will only come after May 1st.

I will ask one of my dealers to PM you. They can assist you further.

Live long,
