Has anyone seen and posted about this yet? I haven't checked Diamond Hangout to see if the topic has been mentioned there.

Hi,

My home page is google news so I read about this just a bit ago.  The most recent article says that there's a good chance that an earthquake won't hit since two hours has gone by and there haven't been any reports.

Hope everyone is okay.

MichelleCarmen, do you mean a tsunami won't hit or that the earthquake will not be felt in inhabited places?

oops, I mixed these up.  The report said that a tsunami probably will not hit the coast since two hours has gone by w/out reports. . .

Here's the first article I read.  http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/28/international/asia/28cnd-quake.html?hp&ex=1112072400&en=497384da385a5364&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Here it states that it'll take up to two hours before anyone will know if a tsunami will hit.

I'm not entirely sure about why this one was different, but the direction of the earthquake was said to be southernly this time around so this is probably part of the reason and the waves just blending into the ocean rather than crashing into the shore.

Another article said that the earthquake caused damage to buildings and people were injured.

Indonesian,Thai and Indian authorities are saying the threat of Tsunami has now passed although there was a small tsunami did hit the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. Reports, however, are already coming through of casualties and deaths in Indonesia near the epicenter. Worst hit is the island of Nias which was also badly hit by the Tsunami.

It happened during the night and is very early morning there now so I'd say we won't get much accurate information for a few hours. I believe in areas of Thailand and Sri Lanka sirens rang to wake people up and evacuate them. I cannot imagine the panic and terror this has caused for everyone when they are still trying to rebuild their lives.
