Trying to buy some diamond stud earrings and I'm confused as to whether the various cut terms the vendors use are all equivalent or not. Looking for AGS "ideal" cut or 0 grade b/c the studs aren't going to be very big nor is the color going to be that high so they're going to have to really sparkle to impress.

You will more than likely find Blue Nile's Ideal Cuts equal or better than AGS 0. As an alternative you can run the specs through my AGA-Cut Class DIY grader tool and any rounds which score 1B will be AGS 0 or better and any which score 1A will be at the upper range of Ideal....so long as the Tolkowsky Ideal is the one being considered. We now grade diamonds with light measuring devices, but for the earrings you are searching for, I don't think you need anything but the traditional measures. David S. Atlas |

BN told me when I was shopping that the only criteria they use for ideal is table and depth. Checking sarins, I found a fairly large variation in stones that looked that they might be similar. You will also find that there can be a large price variation in similar stones. Becasue I this, I think sometimes BN has the reputation of being a little higher priced, but this is not always the case. If you look, they will have some very well priced goods. Sometimes, these are exclusive to BN as well. I have a very nice, very well priced stone I bought through BN directly. If you find a nice virtual listed stone that you feel is above your budget or some of the benchmarks in the PS search engine, some of the PS vendors may be able to get it for you at a lower price. Mark at Engagement Rings Direct is especially helpful at finding BN stones since he is based in the diamond district and doesn't have to pay shipping to look at them. By the way, BN can't give you a visual on a drop ship they go direct to you. Return policy is very good though.

Dont know if you have considered it, but Whiteflash have some very good ES stones for earring ready to go. The ones i got where beautiful! (must get an ear shot at some point!) they are very well cut. Both look like they missed being ACA stones by a whisker.

Thanks for the suggestions. Shopping for ear rings is a bit different than looking for an e-ring stone. I feel overwhelmed again.

I suppose things to remember is that you dont need to worry as much with colour and clairty - since they maybe much smaller than one destined for a E-ring, and wont be scrutinized as closely as a Ering.

I'm looking for diamond stud earings. 4 prong settings. White gold. I'm trying to keep the price at around the $1000-1200 mark. I'm guessing that limits me to around the .75 tcw range. Would prefer ideal or near ideal cut since color and clarity aren't going to be very good. But yeah, since they're earrings, I doubt anyone would look at them too carefully. So, how they sparkle is more important.
