hi everyone! im looking into some asscher cut stud earrings online and can't figure out what size is best. im seeing .50 tcw (each about 3.5mm) for about $300-$700 difference in price from .75 tcw (about 4mm) in similar cuts/specs and am wondering: 1- do you think a .5 mm difference in size would be noticeable? (trying to justify the huge price difference) 2- are either of these 2 sizes too small to care anyway since the step pattern probably wont be noticeable? i'm also looking at an E VS2 Asscher pendant about 5.15 mm. so want to see what would be most proportional. thanks!  My favorite color is sparkle!!! |

How big are your earlobes? The bigger they are, the less of a statement your earrings will make. If you have tiny lobes, the smaller pair will look bigger than they would if you have larger lobes. Definetly try and find some earrings of similar cut & mm (even princess cut) to try on before deciding. But, just as a side note, I am one who prefers smaller diamonds and even 3.5 mm seems a bit small for me! I'd go slightly larger even if this means saving additional money over the next six months (or however long this takes). FWIW, I have two square baquette diamonds that I think would be about the size or maybe slightly smaller than the stones you're looking into and when I hold them up I can clearly see their pattern, but they're set into a ring so they're about 1 1/2 feet away from me. I think in the ear, the pattern would get lost in my hair and in the amount of distance most stand away from a person.

In this type of stone, I'd get the largest you can afford. I think you're right to be concerned about being able to see/appreciate the shape and cut in the ear in the smaller szes...RBs can pack a punch in very small sizes for earrings, but I think some other cuts need a little more weight to have a presence. Just my .02. PS Michelle's point about lobe size is very very good. Could help you--could work against you. Something to consider as well.

Have you actually tried any on? I ask because I tried on 60 pt. square emerald cut studs that looked amazing on display. When I put them on (I have smallish earlobes) the depth made them look like bolts sticking out of my ears. They looked nothing like I expected.

I would look for some square cuts (= with barely clipped corners, like the square diamonds in deco jewelry) , with relatively shallower depth (around 60%) and larger tables (65%-70%... or so) for small earrings. Not that they shouldn't be brilliant - I just think the larger table delivers some desirable flash better seen in earrings (the scintillation of 4mm stones is not all that critical - and that's what gets lost first in those flat-faced cuts). The square shape would probably be more visible in V-shape prongs - and such step cut squares could easily be set in whatever settings meant for princess cuts. I wouldn't be bringing this up if square baguette cut diamonds weren't making a comeback. I see them labeled "Ascher" in channel set bands by several brand names and, well, everywhere as soon as one asks.I-J/VS should be perfectly fine for the sparklers You might want to ask WF

I think you could get away with .50 for rounds, but for asschers this may be small. one probably would not be able to discern it is an asscher. I wouldn't get anything smaller then 1.0 per ear!

If you can find some locally, you should try to shop and try them on. I found I didn't like EC's for earrings when I tried them on, even tho I love them for rings. Asshers are different with their squareness for earrings, but trying them on live would probably help you understand how they will look and what you need to make nice earrings. it's more than just specs....

very good point about the depth of the asschers not being the same as round earrings, don't know if i'd want frankenbolts on my ears...even if they were beautiful asschers! secondly on the diameter, a .38c round brilliant is about 4.7mm if it is well cut. do you know what a 3.5mm or a 4mm earring looks like on the ear? i would venture to say somewhat small depending on what size your ears and lobes are. i have fairly small ears (according to Greg who calls them pixie elf child ears). i would also suggest to try them on locally at least to get an idea... personally i only find asschers appealing in the larger sizes, aka 1c and above and even really more like 2c and above..because that step pattern that makes the asscher so beautiful needs to be easily seen to be appreciated... so my suggestion would be if you really do want asscher earrings and find you like them even after trying them on, wait until you can afford a bigger size, at least more around 4.5mm or 4.7mm since my .38c round earrings look nice and normal for daily wear. but again, i want to upgrade THOSE to bigger, so i can't even imagine getting asscher earrings, i would need 1.5c's on each ear! keep us updated! ________________________________ |
