I am very interested in emerald cuts.  I know that with most brilliant cuts it is safe to go color:I or better, clarity: S1 or better.  What are the recommendations for the emerald cut.  I do want it to look clean to the eye, but keep the price reasonable.

They show color more and clarity is easier to see too.
So you might like H VS2

for cut look at the stones with ideal-scope images in Cut Quality Search and test them with Dave atlas's AGA cut classess in the tutorial section

The most common recommendation I've read about ECs is to keep the colour H and above, clarity is at VS2 and above.

In reality, however, it may be a little different for you or me.  The H VS2 is very safe for everyone.  If you are on a budget or your eyes are more forgiving, an I or SI1 might do.

If you are not as colour sensitive, perhaps an I is fine but for most people, the threshold is an H because ECs really do show body colour.

There are also some eye clean SI1 where the inclusion is white and can be hidden by a prong but you'll have to search hard to find those.  Due to to nature of the step cut, ECs show everything.  The slightest inclusion can be seen from the top and all angles.

This place is a good place to start for cuts on ECs:
