Minny, Manufacturers usually will make the prongs too big in order to accommodate as many stones as possible. It’s easy for the setter to make them shorter, it’s very difficult to make them longer. This gives your jeweler the maximum flexibility to fit your stone to your mounting to meet your exact requirements. No you are not showing anal retentive streaks. Your jeweller is absolutely right. Every setting starts off that way. They are longer and thicker then they need to be. There are a few reasons, Neils one being the most obvious factor. It means nothing to the setter how they look before they start. They couldn't be shaped by Tacori as the setter must bend the metal over the stone and will use force to get it there. A shaped point/grain could not be used as the prongs will have had a lot of shaping done to them by the time the stone is set. The setter will have to cut in the grooves (seat the stone) and apply pressure to the point to get the metal flush with the stones table. In order to match the Tacori setting, the setter would shape the grains after the stone is firmly sett. An expeienced setter would do both at the same time, as creating the grains will at the same time invariably secure the stone. Has the setter made this type of point before? The workmanship is more akin to pave' then regular claw/prong setting. He will need to divide three sections and grain them. On this scale it is not something any setter could do and do neatly, so there is a risk. I think the jeweller would have warned you if he wasn't certain. I hope it comes out great. Phillip

Neil and Phillip, Thank you for your replies!! I am relieved to hear that this is the way it is usually done, although I am still somewhat wary of the jeweler's ability to replicate the prong tips....so far they have not given me much reason to have confidence in them, but that is another story! I am nervous b/c one of the main reasons I chose this setting was due to its somewhat unique prongs -- in person they look a lot less large/obvious/noticeable than in the photo. If they don't turn out well, I will be so disappointed -- who wants a ring with 8 ugly prongs?? That's a lot of ugly! At least they have a sample ring in the store that they can compare it to when setting the stone. (Come to think of it, I guess they would have had to finish the prongs of the sample setting too, when they set the CZ into it?? So......it would seem that they DO have the ability to do it....right? So I should just SHUT UP and CALM DOWN?!?! ) Ok, I'm done now. Sean -- no, you are not missing anything -- this setting is EXTREMELY hard to find! It is not on Tacori's website, nor is it found in any of the jewelers' Tacori ordering books (in my area, at least). That's the ONLY reason I chose to order my ring from this particular jeweler -- they had a sample of the ring in their store, and they had an order number for it (not a Tacori number, but their own model number for it). I got the photo from Billbarnes.com -- they carry it too. Here's a photo of the side view -- what do you think? ![]()

I love that setting! It's really pretty from the side...simple but fancy too! I hope the jeweler gets the prongs right for you. They are very pretty!

Thanks, Patty! I love it too -- my boyfriend strongly prefers plain solitaire settings, and I looove antique-y, interesting settings, so this was our way to compromise!! I cannot wait until it is finished!

Minny, that Tacori setting is amazing. I've never seen it before and it's probably now my favorite Tacori setting. You must post pictures when it's done!!! I think you made a great choice.

FireGoddess -- Thank you SO much for saying that! Of course I have been having second thoughts (and third and fourth...) since we ordered it b/c it is so different from what I originally had in mind. (But since we've been talking seriously about getting engaged for over a year and a half, I have had PLENTY of time to change my mind!!) I will definitely post pictures when it is finished! Also, I have been following your pear reset saga closely -- I hope everything works out for you!

This is not a ring I would recommend setting with a CZ, unsetting and setting again (the process is repeated), though it definately can be done. If they are good - you are ok. Perhaps they set the other one you saw in store? Wether they can do it right, has got nothing to do with the salesman/jeweller. It has everything to do with the person who will do the setting and it is a question of can or can't, and has or hasn't, not will or won't, so if they say they can it is up to you if you believe them.

Thanks again, Phillip. I actually visited the store today to request something in writing that stated that they had possession of my diamond while they set it. We talked about the prongs again, but after reading your last post I called them up just to make sure someone had specifically spoken to the setter about this style of prongs and his ability to do it....they very defensively assured me that he would duplicate the sample ring exactly. Sigh. I guess that's the answer. On another note, I noticed that you work in Melbourne -- I studied abroad at Monash University for a semester in 1999!! It was the BEST TIME OF MY LIFE, period. I loved Melbourne and hope to visit Australia again sometime. If I do, I will be sure to check out your store!
