What does this mean on an old european cut.

H color SI1 clarity... Set in a bezel... .74

What would chipped girdle mean to the look and the durability of a stone...

Just a consumer here.  I would say if the diamond is bezel set it would not affect the look.  As far as for the durability, I think it would need to be inspected by an independent diamond appraiser who would be able to tell you from the crystal direction and all if it would affect durability or if it could be polished out and how much weight would be lost.  I have also read however that there is a risk with putting any diamond on the wheel again to be re-polished.  An appraiser is the way to go in the first instance.

Thanks... I was hoping that this was so.... I love the ring... but from what people have said on pricescope, I am a little afraid of less than perfect, so I was just wondering how less than perfect this was. Thanks again.

It is not uncommon to find "knife edge" girdles on old diamonds. How serious that chip is (from a pin prick visible under magnification to a gash across the crown anything is called "chip") is what matters. Can you see it ?  Was the stone graded Si1 before of after the damage - with the new crack, it might have become I1 from SI... no way to tell without seing it.

The bezel setting would protect a thin girdle from most mishaps, as far as I know.

Do you already own the diamond?  Maybe some of the experts will comment here as I am just a consumer.  If you do a search there will be other posts about girdles chipping.

It is a small chip that can be seen under magnification. I am wrong on the clarity. It dropped from a VVS2 to a VS1

Hi MINE,
I have a european cut with a chipped girdle (2 chips actually) They were discovered by Rich Sherwood while i was getting an updated appraisal. It went from a VS 2 to an SI2 but it's eyeclean and Rich said there would be no problem setting it. the setter can just work around the chips or I can have the chips polished out. you can see pics and find out more details here

imo, old european cuts are beautiful and have tons of fire.
