Hello fellow PS'ers!! I think this question is mainly directed to those in the jewelry industry, but anyone who knows is certainly welcome to chime in. While working in a jewelry store (mainly as an associate), how much time does one get to fiddle around with equipment (scopes and such), and how much time do you get to learn the merchandise ( looking at different loose stones under the scopes to learn more about them) ? I ask these questions because I'm always hearing how you should "know your merchandise", like being familiar with different pieces, and different stones so that you can be an effective salesperson. I think that when a customer asks a question, the jeweler should be pretty knowledgeable about that piece, instead of saying " uh....I'm not sure.....let me go ask someone". I just don't know how much time you get to learn about the pieces. Would you be able to look at them when there's no customers ( a slow period of the day) ? Hope this makes sense! Thanks for the input!

I worked in a fine jewelry store and learned a lot. I was really lucky in that my manager had a graduate gemologist degree and was willing to teach me everything I wanted to know about diamonds and gems. He knew I had a keen interest and was all to willing to indulge me in my passion for jewelry. When I interviewed for the job, I pretty much told him I wanted to learn all that I could. It was a great experience.

Cool, Kaleigh! So you got to learn alot? Did you feel comfortable when a customer would ask you alot of questions regarding certain pieces? That's great that you had an enthusiastic boss and atmosphere!

At first I was handeling the sales of Mikimoto pearls, gold jewlery and semi precious gems. I learned fairly quickly and got promoted to the diamond department. I was scared at first, but I had the support of my manager and loved my new position. He was only a step away if I needed his advice. My first big diamond sale was a Lazare Kalplan diamond ring. The customers wanted me to bring in some loose stones, Lazar Kaplan was the first that I know of to brand the ideal name, I could be wrong. Anyway we got the stones in, and my manager helped me with the whole presentation process, before the couple came in. Long story short, they bought a lovely three stone ring for 25K, and that was back in the early 90's!!! I earned a loupe award for that sale and it's the same loupe I use today. My story is atypical in that I had a wonderful mentor who i will always remember fondly!!

No I'm not at the moment, if I do anything it will be more of a personal shopper type of business. I was held up at gunpoint, so that pretty much did it for me. I had little kids at the time and I just got the sh*t scared out of me!!!

Kaleigh, OMG!!! How horrifying! I assume you're ok, right? Nothing physical happened? Yeah, that would do it for me too. Do you think that happens alot??

I wouldn't say it happens a lot, but it does happen. I read JCK and National Jeweler (both trade journals) and there are stories in almost every issue about some jeweler who was shot and killed, or traveling sales reps that are robbed.

IrishEyes, I'm fine, I was lucky. After that the store hired armed guards and the situation pretty much calmed down after that. ____________________________ |
