Greetings, This is my first time on this forum. I have been reading off and on for the last couple of months and have learned a lot. I have fallen in love with the most beautiful and wonderful girl in the world. " src="http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/30.gif" border=0> [for any ladies out there, I'm sure you would rank second and that is still a very big compliment " src="http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/20.gif" border=0>]I have been trying to educate myself on diamonds since I hope to purchase one within the next couple of months. I started at ground zero as far as knowledge or appreciation for these gems and have come a long way recently. I wondered if I could get help on a couple of initial questions. A little background on what I think I will be looking for: Ideal or super ideal cut with a nice hearts and arrow pattern. A very strong performing diamond. Probably around 1.25 c. [1.2-1.35?] G-H color SI1-VS2 clarity I'm thinking i can get an incredibly beautiful one like this for $6500 to $7500. One that would be as beautiful and dazzling to the naked eye as possible. I wouldn't be opposed to spending more if necessary, but probably wouldn't go over $9000. First on the HCA light return/ fire/ scentillation scale, how much stock can be given to the "excellent" vs "very good" rating. I read as long as it is under 2 it may be a strong performer. Can a "very good" out perform an "excellent"? Also what is a "twinning wisp"? Are clouds or surface graining a problem on a VS2 or SI1 grade? How do you get an insciption of a pet name on a girdle? On GOG, why do some of the hearts have ugly black spots on the pictures? If anyone has suggestions of ones to look at please let me know. I want it to be very special. Thank you in advance for your help " src="http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/35.gif" align=absMiddle border=0>

Hi there KCMan, I plugged in your paramters for H&A diamonds to the p-scope search and there are a few diamonds that meet your criteria. The ones that fall within your budget are more toward the 1.20ct size than the 1.35ct size.![]() The man who created the HCA tool is a regular participant on this board and may just answer you himself. My understanding is that it could be difficult to distinguish among diamonds that score 2.0 or better. I believe the text on the Cut Advisor actually says that a stone that scores 1.5 could appear nicer to your eyes than one that scores .5 (or something to that effect). As for the rest of your questions, they're out of my realm, but I'll be interested to learn the answers if an expert posts! Good luck! Cheers, LizzyD The Red Sox, the Patriots, and diamonds; what more could a girl from Baahstin ask for? |

certainly got a good budget there... plenty of rocks about in that budget. but they do tend to edge towards that 1.2 side of things like this one or this one This one is a 1.35 SI1 H scoring a 0.9 on the HCA here its a WF a cut above H&A diamond for about $8k (sorry just noticed its sold. good luck About the inscription - Gemappraisers.com are a firm of independant appraisers in Philly, and Oldminer aka David Atlas who posts here runs the place... they will do inscriptions for a small fee. - I believe David is currently away in India at this moment but you can get intouch with Chris. - do a search for oldminer for Chris' email address - i cant remember it off hand, but they did the appraisal of my diamond before it was sent to me. _____________________ |

Thank you everyone for your help so far. It's been very helpful. Several of the suggested diamonds are ones I've been browsing. I really haven't paid any attention to the diameters. I assume once you finalize a comparison of everything else, it is realy the diameter that matters and not the weight since my priority would be more in the looks. As for inscribing her pet name, does everyone think that would be stupid? I found out from gemappraisers it would only cost $56. I know it would only be viewable under a microscope and might even be blocked by the mounting. I call her "kitten" and i just thought it would be romantic if she were to have the chance to see that on there and then just to know it was there even though not visible except with a microscope. I thought it might be endearing. Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic. As for the markings that show up on a lot of hearts and arrow pictures, while I thought it could be from inclusions, I don't understand why they dont correlate with the inclusions on the lab report or the blow up pictures. Is this what you would see through a hearts and arrow viewer? As for my budget, my top priority is to get a gorgeous diamond that she can be very proud of and reflects her wonderful personality and beauty. If its a matter of spending more and not being able to tell any difference unless you are an expert, I imagine we could find somewhere else to spend the money. When I first walked into a jewelry store and they asked what I wanted to spend for the diamond and ring, I said I was thinking $2500. I was pretty naive. Hope to hear more advise and opinions. The diamond knowledge and appreciation world is very new to me. " src="http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/34.gif" align=absMiddle border=0>kcman

That is a very sweet thought and I'm sorry if my answer sounded flippant, I really didn't mean for it to. I thought you wanted to put A pet's name (not HER pet name) on the diamond! Anyway, I truly think it would be sweet and endearing, and as long as you realize that it will only be visible under high magnification, and may possibly get hidden behind prongs... why not?! It's certainly a novel idea... I have never heard of anyone else having it done. Oh, one more thing... after a diamond has been cleaned several times, etc., I have heard that the inscription loses its "black lettering" and becomes "clear", even harder to read. I haven't seen my own inscription in months so I can't speak from personal experience on that! Maybe an expert here will chime in on that. Well, let us know what you decide to do. You certainly have some AWESOME choices in the posts above! Lynn And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |

For the black marks - yes could be the inclusions... remember the picture may not be turned the same way as that on the lab report, or else.. what you are seeing in the picture is the result of the internal reflections of the light bouncing round inside.. which may add further confusion. Or simply may be small bits of dust that is on the diamond. _____________________ |
