The attached fuzzy picture shows the actress Drew Barrymore in one of my favorite movies, "Ever After."

Based on what I read in the magazines, the circlet she's wearing on her head is really a necklace. I've been trying to find something similar, in silver or gold, but so far no luck. I'm not looking for an exact match, just a similar look of the link design. Has anyone here seen anything like that? I would appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks belle! I've been checking eBay diligently, searching for "link necklace" or "chain necklace" to narrow down the field a bit, but the results are usually the generic gold or silver chains. Maybe I'm not searching with the right keywords...

I tried searching combinations with Ever After in the search string...didn't see anything there.  I'll see if I can think of anything else as well.  LOVE that movie...

Woo hoo! Go belle go!

FireGoddess, wasn't it just a great movie? I loved Danielle's intelligence and spirit. And those beautiful dresses she wore... *sigh* Watching this movie (and "Lord of the Rings") really got me interested in movie jewelry and costumes, and eBay has been the main beneficiary of my newfound hobby.

Thanks so much for helping me out in the hunt!

It looks like vintage silver. The design is allot more likely in silver than gold....IMO.

Although the word is correct, this might not be called "link" necklace.  Try a search for "Taxco" silver.  The style might yield some piece signed Castillos or Aguillar. Earlier Jensen gem set pieces (probably amethyst) might have this feal.

Aside Ebay, try Trocadero.com.  That site lists a couple dozen antique shops: it is easy to follow the links into each shop's inventory - one item might just do the trick.

The looks reminds me strongly of Art Nouveau Scandinavian silver (1910-1920).

But I don't think there is a strict category likely to yield lots of ptions of just this look.

My brother in law works in the movie prop business, and this is his advice when I wanted something I saw in a movie (the bead curtains in "Planet of the Apes!):  get the movie, watch the credits, and find out who did the costumes and/or props.  Find the company on the web, email them, and ask them about the product.  Sometimes they can even give you the specs, where they got it, how much, etc.  Sometimes they still HAVE the product and would be willing to sell it!

Appreciate your very helpful thoughts, Ana! The necklace from the movie also looked vintage to me, but I didn't know enough about vintage pieces to even guess the style. Thanks to you, I now have at least some keywords by which to narrow down my search.

A quick look on Trocadero came up with an intriguing necklace "Mexican Sterling and Brass Cleat Necklace":

Maybe if I add a teardrop stone to it? Hmm... Have to keep that one in mind while I keep looking!

Belle, in costumes as well as in jewelry, I have neither the talent nor the skills to create them, but I do love to admire (and collect, as much as my bank account would allow) the creations of talented artists!

Rebemdee, I just saw your post -- what a fabulous idea! Thank you! (And belle is right, I do already have a copy of the movie. ) I'm going to check the credits right now! Of course I may have to watch the entire movie again too...

I almost forgot that imdb.com lists the full cast and crew for the movie. No company listed for the costume designer, though. Have to keep digging...

By the way, just for fun, this eBay auction has pictures of the replica costume I'm hoping to get, and I'm thinking of wearing the necklace/circlet along with it. Mixing movies, I know , but I think they might work well together...

Lovely Georg Jensen sterling moonstone necklace, but at more than $2900 it is slightly beyond my budget.

so are you thinking of buying the replica costume?  ....it's beautiful!  $250 is pricey for a simple piece like that...but it is officially licensed, which is of course what you are paying for.  i say, you may have more talent than you think...a dress like that is not hard to make (really!) and panne velvet is only about $4/yd.  you can do it!!  (sorry, that's all the cheap in me talking...no, no, it's the challenge in me...yes, that's it!  you know i love a challenge!)

that moonstone piece is very nice!

Try a search for circlet on eBay. There are many matches. I also found this site:

http://www.sapphireandsage.com/caps.html

If you do a search on Google for Renaissance jewelry, that pulls up a lot of hits also.

Good Luck!

Well, I do not know who made the very piece, but these guys have produced some rather exotic  jewelry props and seem to have just the right inclination for this type of project.

Belle, I know you're right! But you just have more confidence in my sewing skills than I do myself! I also like the idea of collecting an officially licensed replica, though definitely not at the price that the eBay auction is asking for! I posted the auction because it has some nice close-up pictures of the dress. The dress is available directly from the the company that makes it, Museum Replicas, at a more reasonable price.

Thanks CK! Great site -- I love their replica pieces based on historical portraits.

Part of what made the search tougher for me is that I want a more elaborate design on the metal links going all the way around the necklace/circlet, if that makes any sense. I'll try searching for Renaissance pieces.

Thanks to the helpful suggestions I received in this thread, I found some possibilities! While those necklaces aren't really close to the look of the "original" from the movie, I like their link designs, and they should make nice circlets too. (Wasn't looking specifically for floral/leaves theme, but those really stood out for me.)

The first two auctions close within a few hours from now, so I need to make up my mind very soon. I'd love to hear everyone's opinions though!

hey singingbell!
i like both of the ebay pieces....i would prefer the second one, just because it has the cool dangling stone, but they're both nice.
i also like the second rubylane piece because the leaves look like the ones on the elven brooch
...can't wait to see what you decide!

The last one seems to have the clearest detail - the patina probably helps show off the design as usual. The previous one with leaves comes second, I guess.  Well, IMO.

The ones on Ebay are labeled "silver tone" so that's probably not silver. Nothing wrong with that for the price, but I would not expect good work on common metal unless it comes from some known costume jewelry maker - and that's not the case.

Belle -- You're so kind, and so funny! If I get the dress, I think it'll be hard to keep me from wearing it because it's so pretty! I'll probably put on the costume every morning just to feel royal while having breakfast in the kitchen... LOL

As for the circlet to complete my breakfast ensemble... I went ahead and bid on the second eBay necklace. The dangle was a big selling point for me, although I'm thinking of replacing the dangle with a single teardrop gemstone for a more delicate look as a circlet. Like Ana said, it is "silver tone" and by an unknown maker, but the price seemed OK for the material and the closeup picture showed some nice detailing -- so I took the chance. In the closing minutes I got a little too caught up in the moment and bid higher than I planned, but in the end I would have really regretted it if I stuck to my limit and lost the bid.

The two sterling necklaces from rubylane are still calling out to me... Should I resist and be , or be and order them both? I hope the eBay necklace arrives soon, otherwise I'd be tempted!

LOL! Of course! What was I thinking!

I saw your post in the ring thread as well -- you're so sweet! It turned out that making the ring took quite a bit longer than I anticipated (about two months), and searching for costume and circlet ideas became a welcome distraction while waiting for news about the ring. Now that the ring is here, everything else suddenly went on the back burner... Ha ha! I'm about 85% sure that I'm going to buy the replica dress I mentioned earlier, but I'm going to keep looking a little bit more. I'll keep you posted!

My eBay necklace did arrive. It's quite pretty, although in person it doesn't look silver-toned but more brassy colored, and I think it would look better after a good cleaning. One problem I didn't think about was the length -- it's a bit too short to wear as a circlet, so I'll look for an extender.

Hope you enjoyed your vacation!
