This is my boulder opal pendant. Notice how the play of color changes based on the viewing angle.

Boulder opal is opal occurring in ironstone matrix; the opal is cut on top with the ironstone matrix as backing that adds strength and a dark background.

It is NOT a doublet or triplet which is an assembled stone where the layers are cemented together.

Very pretty necklace. I hope to find an opal ring someday. Your necklace has many colors in it and thats what I like in particular.

best,

cflutish:

Thank you so much for posting that beautiful opal!

I particularly like the mounting...did you have it done?   Is it open in the back?

I have an opal that is set in a stock basket four-prong mounting (I'm not sure I'm describing it correctly)...and I hate it!  I'd love to remount it some day.  I've saved the picture of your beauty for future reference.

Thanks!

Widget, yes it is open in the back and is a handmade split bail mounting.

Here's another picture, but this time we took it indoors. The ones above in the sunlight tended to wash out the colors.

How about a neck shot? That's one of the prettiest opals I've ever seen.

Oh cflutist, I love your boulder opal pendant, the colors are just amazing.  I have loved opals all my life, but yours is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.

As I found out today, opals are hard to take pictures of! I'd see a good shot showing all the fire and try to get it with the camera, but any movement at all, and you'd end up with something else.

I tried using a light with it, but that turned everything that pinkish color.....it actually was on a white piece of paper!
