Hello all![]() I have a few questions, mainly on things I've seen around here that sort of confuse me. There seem to be different "reports" done on diamonds, depending on who you are dealing with. So here goes: 1. What exactly is a Rap Report? 2. A sarin report? 3. Does the Brillancescope simply show brillance and fire in a diamond, and how does one go about getting one done? 4. Why doesn't the GIA grade H&A's ( I had read this in an earlier post). So I would like to know about these things, and find out how a consumer would go about getting some of these done. I would also love to hear your opinions regarding these items, because many of you are truly the experts!!! ![]() Thanks for the help. If you want to PM me on this, since there are a number of questions on here, that would be cool

OK, Irish Eyes... I'll bite! ![]() Although I am NOT an expert by any means -- just someone who loves diamonds and got hooked on them here! 1. The Rap Report is short for "Rapaport Price List" and (as I understand it) is a wholesale price list for diamonds. 2. A sarin report is a measurement by a machine that gives all the measurements of a stone. Not just table, depth, girdle, but also crown and pavilion angles - which are critical to determine cut. There can be slight variances between machines and this is not unusual. 3. The Brilliancescope is a machine that is intended to "measure" how a diamond performs in bright light. You can get it done anywhere that has the machine. I have no idea how rare they are... but I'm guessing most mom-and-pop stores or most mall stores don't have one. Just my guess. 4. I have no idea why GIA doesn't include all the numbers on their certs (which is what I assume you mean?) Probably partly because those are murky waters that they'd rather not get into! Even AGS (which does include all numbers) doesn't "grade H & A's". The best way to get these reports, etc (with the exception of #1, which I doubt is made available to consumers) is to purchase your stone through an online vendor. Most of them have all or at least some of these bells and whistles, along with Idealscope images, H & A images, magnified photos, etc. There are some arguments pro and con for some of these machine reports (B'scope, ISee2, etc.) -- but it can be very helpful and important when you are purchasing a stone "sight unseen". But the very best test, ever, will always be your own two eyes. And most e-vendors have very fair return policies - so you really can buy with confidence. I hope some of the true experts here feel free to chime in, and also to correct me if I gave any misinformation!!!! Lynn PS You could also do a search of past threads on most (if not all) of these subjects and get LOTS and LOTS of valuable information. And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |

Lynn, you have learned well. Brava!! A couple of follow-up comments. First, searches on these topics - as suggested - will yield exhaustive information and opinion. 1. The Rap should not be considered authoritative. 2. AGS reports include crucial measurements, but with GIA and many other reports a Sarin is needed to determine more about the cut. 3. Brilliancescope reports are a bit controversial – as they measure a diamond in only one lighting condition (and it’s artificial) – but in the hands of an experienced operator they are an intriguing piece of the overall puzzle. 4. GIA will announce their new grading system this year and will be in the business of including more numbers. Here is some information on Hearts & Arrows patterning. John |
