Should it be this hard for my jeweler to get some emerald cuts for me to see??

I need a reality check about whether or not my jeweler is really working for me...

Four weeks ago we called the local jeweler we have used for years to say we want to upgrade my current stone (.82 RB G si2) to an emerald cut stone. In one week he was able to show us two stones. We told him we wanted to go larger and gave him some general color specs. A week later we called and he said he had not been able to get any more stones, which struck me as odd. When I tried to tell him what I was looking for (after reading up here and feeling much better informed), I felt like he brushed me off - did not take notes, ask questions. He just said he would call his diamond broker in Tel Aviv.

By this time I was really put off because we had waited another week and I felt he had no interest in learning what I wanted. I decided to fax him my specifications (color, depth and table percentages, clarity range, etc.) plus a couple of stones I had found on ps as examples...

I called again today (another week later) and he told me he sent my specs to a few brokers but has not heard anything yet. He then repeated what he said earlier that "it is really hard to find EC stones".

I am fuming but I feel stuck to this guy because he will trade up our stone. I feel I could have already found a stone working with an internet vendor.

Another B&M vendor we visited two weeks ago (just to see some stones) called us back in four days and had 4 stones for us to look at.

Finally, here is where I need advice -- is this they typical time it takes to work with a jeweler and see emerald cut stones? If so, I will relax.

Unfortunately, I no longer feel this jeweler really cares what I think (or does not know that much about diamonds). I feel like I am bothering him. Perhaps we do not seem like a lot of business for him? Perhaps he really does not want to upgrade us?

Any perspectives here are greatly appreciated!

THanks!!

Sounds like my experience, except I was not upgrading.  This B & M jeweler was very nice at first.  then we asked to see a cushion cut and I gave specs.  I was very specific about the l:w ratio, as well as color, clarity ranges etc.  (I wanted 1:1 to 1:1.08)  He called in one stone for us to see--it was 1:1.2!  He said it "looked square to him."  It was also an EGL and not a GIA, and the color looked off 1-2 grades to me.  We politely asked if they could bring in some more stones, possibly two to select from, with the specs we wanted.  He told us that certified square cushions were very rare, and it would take some time.  After over two weeks of not hearing from him, I found two cushions on the net inventory for anothe local B & M.  Called the jeweler and he had the stone fed exed in by the next day (and it was a Saturday).  I dunno what the deal was with jeweler #1--whether we weren't spending enough (around $10K total), or whether he thought I was a PITA because of wanting a certified stone with certain specs.

Maybe your jeweler does not really want to take your stone in trade, and this is how he's expressing it?  Since it *is* a RB, could you maybe sell it on your own, and buy from a PS vendor? or talk to another jeweler about trading or consigning?  Good luck!!

Sad to say it also sounds like my old jeweler. Well, it finally hit me, he wasn't interested in letting me upgrade and certainly not to the quality stone I was looking for. I eventually ended up consigning with a ps vendor...
