Picked up e-ring from store today, and realized that
when the stone was set, it was set with a prong
blocking part of the inscription on the girdle.

We're quite upset. Waited a long time to have the
setting made and stone set. Also gave the store
specific instructions to not cover the girdle
inscription with the prongs.

What should we do?
Is it easy to unset & reset a stone?
Does it take long?
What are the risks? We FEAR a chipped and broken
stone if it is reset, especially reading
FEYDAKIN/Steve's 3/1/05's post "Setting Round Stones
in 4 prong Mountings."
Should we have other concerns? Other concerns if we
do reset?

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you
resolve it?

Please let us know. Thanks in advance.

Frankling,

Sorry about your situation.  I had the same thing happen with me, where I told the vendor to have the diamond specifically set with the inscription visible, and then the instructions were not followed.  In my case, there were some differences:

- the setter was also separate from my location, in another state, and separate from the vendor
- another problem was found with the way the diamond was secured in the setting; a prong was turned up, and would catch a sweater if not secured
- the vendor, when told of the problem, did not volunteer to make the situation right.  Instead, I was aware of another local jeweler that could do the work, and the vendor encouraged me to have them do the minor work.

Have you reviewed the outcome you noticed with the vendor?  Although they did not carry out your instructions, I am led to understand it can be fairly easily re-set.  If your vendor will assume responsibility for doing this when you bring it to their attention (you might ask them how the mistake could have happened, and hope by their explanation, you will feel reassured it won't happen again), would you be reluctant to go forward with that solution?

Good luck with this, and let us know how it turns out.

Ira (Ruffles have Ridges) Z.

DON'T WORRY VERY EASY JOB. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS LOOSEN UP FEW PRONGS ROTATE THE DIAMOND AND SET IN BETWEEN THE PRONG FOR AN EASY VIEWING WITH A JEWELERS LOOP. SHOULD TAKE NO MORE THAN 10 MINUETS.

Will loosening up the prongs cause the prongs to weaken or break?  We don't want to request the fix, then worry about losing the stone.

Undoubtedly the reset may cause scratches on the prongs, which will require polishing.  Will polishing done on prongs after reset cause damage or markings on my stone?
