So this is interesting. My husband and I have been looking around lately for an upgrade to my stone. We're looking at princess cuts in the 1.05-1.50 ish range. Been getting some pretty good quotes, a little high, but decent. So today, he goes to the mall to look at some tools. Of course, I stay home (hehehe, why would I go with him for that?!). Him being the sweetie that he is, he stopped into a store to 'look' at some stones. He told them what I was looking for, a G/H, VVS 1-2 , etc. They find him one and gave him a quote. Can you guys guess what it was......... TWELVE THOUSAND FRICKIN' DOLLARS!! yup $12,000 smackaroo's. He came home and told me this. I cannot believe that. $12,000 for a 1.5 ct. princess! I don't care how pretty that stone might have been (although I imagine it wasn't anything mind-blowing), I would not pay that much. Do all maul type stores charge this much? I know they have a rent to pay, but geez......anyway, just couldn't believe this and wanted to share. I'm sure some of you have had similar experiences. Love to hear 'em!

This doesn't seem like THAT much for a 1.5 carat especially since it's a VVS stone! I've been quoted 8-9,000 for 1 carat before and it was "down" in the SI range.

When I was looking for 1.5 ct pears at a diamond "wholesale" store, I was also seeing prices hovering around $10K and up, so it doesn't seem like $12K for a VVS princess is way out of the ballpark these days....

Just did a quickie search on PS and found 1.5c G VVS1 princesses ranging from $10300 to $12300. So the $12k isn't SO off .... you definitely pay through the nose for the VVS clarity! I would drop that to VS or SI and focus on finding an eye-clean stone, huge price difference! Edited to add that a 1.50c G VS2 princess ranges from $7500 to $9500 on that same search. ________________________________ |

My friend Paul Antwerp just sent his first batch of princess cuts to AGS. He is cutting them to the parameters of the AGS o grade for princess cuts that they will publish soon. I have no idea what he has cut as far as sizes and qualities, but if you are looking for the prettiest princess cuts on the planet, I know he will be releasing them soon. You may want to contact him for having one custom cut. Wink Wink Jones |
