Just curious, when they say 2 month salary rule, do they mean gross monthly salary or after-tax monthly salary?

I never cared for the rule. I just had a number in my mind which I can afford, and I went with it.

I scoff at the rules.  I think the rule should be spend what you want but buy what you can afford, this may be more or less than two  months salary.  Keep in mind diamond prices have gone way up since that rule was determined.  There are no rule with diamonds besides the one that says cut is king!

Who are, "they?"    lol  We picked out the size and quality of stone that appealed most to me rather than go by a dollar amount.    Love and engagement symbolism shouldn't be based on amount of money you make.

Yup. buy what you like and can afford. All these "rules" are stupid.

My GUESS: The 2-month rule was set by a group of bachelors while having drinks in a pub. The idea was to set an approximate spending limit on diamond buying. Since LADIES always wanted big stones, this was the best that those men could come up with to kinda scoff off "want big stone" attitude of women.

Kevin,

It's believed that the rule was started by Debeers marketing.

And in regards to your guess, even though the discussion here is about beautiful diamonds, I believe that most ladies cheerish the diamonds in the spirit they were given regardless of size and don't need to have their attitudes "scoffed off"

Yep, it was the N. W. Ayers Agency of New York. It was in 1938 (near the end of the Depression) that Harry Oppenheimer of DeBeers made a trip to NY to find an advertising agency which could help rebuild the shattered retail market. It was N. W. Ayers that coined the slogan "A Diamond is Forever" in 1948 and later, a hundred variations on the theme of diamonds, love, and success.

Definitely gross. Why? Because that way DeBeers makes more money.

Its not a rule but rather a marketing ploy by the Diamond Promotion Service. Spend what you can afford, or spend what you feel is right for you (e.g. I have a friend who owns a $2 million dollar house but wears a .33ct e-ring because she is not into jewelry).

If you are the gal...it's 2 months gross...if you are the guy...it's 2 months net.

yes, 2 months net after the guy paid all of his other monthly expenses.

I seem to recall reading that the lady that came up with the slogan 'A Diamond is Forever' never married.

For those that never married, remember Marilyn's famous words:

'He's your guy
when stocks are high,
but beware when they start to descend

Because then those louses
go back to their spouses
and diamonds are a girl's best friend."

So do not forget to include the profit of 2 months on your stock portfolio. And the fringe benefits, like your company car, dental plan, and so on.

Diamonds are forever.
Unfortunately most marriages don't last forever.

Why don't women propse to men with a diamond ring?

Personally I think it all depends what you are comfortable with in concerning your finances. If you are comfortable with you decision of what you can afford then by all means do it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I gave my guy a diamond ring when we got engaged. He did propose to me, but then I gave him a ring shortly after.

Um, maybe because that is against the rules?

I heard somewhere that in the UK it is 1 month's salary and in Japan it is 3 month's salary.  The "rules" are tailored to suit each culture and how much "they" can convince guys to spend (or convince girls they need).
