Hello,

I am in the market for an engagement ring in the Atlanta or Birmingham, AL area.  I am new to the area so thought that I would check for rec's of vendors.  I also have an older ring to sell.  Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance.

DN

Not sure about Birmingham, but I think the folks at Brown & Co. in Roswell are great to work with.    D. Gellar & Sons in Vinings has a large selection of settings and are willing to "deal" but it's a serious used car sales kind of establishment -- so prepare yourself for that.  I don't know how knowledgable they are about diamonds -- I think they do a lot of business on the settings.    I'm SO leary of B&M diamonds -- even at Tiffanys.

Before any other jeweler,  I would suggest Pearlmans (at least for the setting):  http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/designermain.asp
They are in Battle Creek, MI -- but I have never met a nicer jeweler (actually I've never met him -- just talked to him on the phone).   I looked everywhere in Atlanta for a specific setting, with no luck -- and really without a lot of help or interest from the jewelers in listening to what I truly wanted.   I had read good things about Bill Pearlman here on Pricescope, so finally gave the store a call.   I spoke to a sales rep first, but she didn't have all of the answers to my questions, so she said someone would call me back.  Sure enough Bill Pearlman called me back within minutes -- and he spent a VERY long time with me on the phone -- VERY very nice and sincere -- and not looking for a quick sell.  He's more interested in the life-time customer.  I LOVE that.    His website is quite extensive -- and when you want to see something in person he is willing to send it to you (with credit card hold) to "play" with for a day (so long as you agree to overnight it back to him).   One of the great things about Bill is that he understands the need to compete with the internet business, so my understanding is that he makes an effort to stay competitive in that market.  He told me that he does about 70% of his business via internet, although he and his father before him have been in the B&M business for many many years (since 1930, according to the website).    That's really unusual for a B&M -- and says a lot about his understanding of the customer base.    and did I mention that he's just SO nice!!!

As for diamonds, there are so many people on pricescope who have had good experiences with the online vendors -- so I would definitely go that route.   The price is SO much less than in a B&M (for same quality stone) -- and you're much more likely to find a QUALITY stone this way, anyhow.  GoodoldGold and Whiteflash have good reputations here.  My bf bought my diamond from Mark Turnowski at engagementringsdirect.com -- he is SO GREAT to work with -- and so reponsive -- and KNOWS his stuff.   I've found that most B&M jewelers don't know that much about diamonds, beyond the "4 C's" -- and there's so much more to know.  Mark is out of NY, but he will send any stone to an appraiser here in town if you want to see it before buying.  That's what he did for us.

Good luck!!!!!   Hope this info helps!!!
