Sorry to bother you as a newbie... Its about that time...for the engagement. I have the setting, it is a Platinum Tiffany Lucida style meant for a 1ct square stone. The prongs are about 5.6mm apart. I have it down to either Asscher, Radiant, or Princess. I am looking to go at least F and VS2. My research is as follows: For Asscher, table around 60 and depth around 68. How far can I stray? For Radiant and Princess, both around 60-65. How much will this matter? My diamond budget is around 4500 and I have been mainly looking at diamond.com, whiteflash.com, and ashford.com Please guide me... ![]() All help appreciated

Welcome to PS. There are several threads on asschers in the first 3 pages of current posts. Have a look around. I will get you started with this one that shows 2 poorly cut asschers: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=23631 ........... Thanks for the response. I looked at the other thread and I cannot tell what would make those asscher's anything short of beautiful. THis must go to my lack of knowledge... Are there any retailers that offer good deals? As of now, I find Diamond.com and whiteflash.com to have the best deals.

'Gues you are right each diamond is beautiful. You can probably find some puzzling shard of glass look alike if you really tried hard... but most are way nicer than that. As long as there is some choice, 'bet one stone will always stand out of any line up and it's usually for it's brilliance regardless of shape. It's a different business to show diamonds online. Each seller has his recipe for doing just that. With enough choice, it's hard to go very wrong. Just IMO, of course. Any stones to talk about already ?

My only thought is that you're probably going to have to go higher (bigger than 1) in carat weight for an asscher than you would for a radiant or princess in the same setting. But being an asscher-lover myself, I can understand making the sacrifice for the stone!!

would you go with the one pictured or the one i put the specs up on? Is the difference in polish and symmetry worth a difference of 200 in price?

if i were you, i would definately get a sarin report on the one for 4700. that report will give you all of the angles including the crown height which is very important in order for the stone to have fire and scintillation from what i have gathered on this site over time. also make sure you get a pic or pics. numbers may look great on paper, but they definately do not mean everything when it comes to asschers.remember, you are not buying a piece of paper, you are buying a diamond. i just posted some #'s of two asschers yesterday that were fairly decent and when the pics came in and were posted the stones did not look good and lots of people here let me know that....which is definately a good thing when you are going to shell out that kind of money.

As far as I know, sarin does not measure the stes of an EC - it gives the crown height allright, but there is n model to allow guessing light return from that for fancies. AGA uses crown height for it's cut grades, but the AGA grades are no HCA-substitute. They do not predict brilliance... The angles on the Sarin report are not very useful for fancies, at least I do not know of any source of advice about how to interpret them. (see the threads on step cuts opened by "kevinraja" recently for more on this). If there is such a source, I'd be happy to learn too

.... this is one example from where crown height is mentioned. i always thought that a crown height in the 14-17% range was desireable/beneficial for an asscher, but i surely could be wrong about that.if anyone else has some more in-depth info on how crown height affects an asscher it would be great to learn something new.
