Newbie On a Humble Budget... Proposing in Florence... Need Help! |

A little background: I am a graduate student, have been dating a girl for the past three years, and am ready to get engaged. She is currently in Africa on an extended mission trip, and I am studying in the US for the next year. However, as of next month I will be in Germany for six months, and in the late part of May my GF is flying up from Africa, meeting me in Frankfurt, and together we will travel to Florence, Italy for a week to catch up, travel a bit of Italy. She doesn't know it yet, but I am planning on proposing there in Florence (I believe the Piasa Michalangelo would be just PERFECT!). I can't think of a more perfect place, and would like to really nail it. So, the problem: I want this to be VERY special, of course, but the fact of the matter is that I am on a limited budget; I'm draining my bank account just for the trip and the ring. I have $2,500 to spend on a ring, and I need some ideas. I have looked at stones I know she likes, and have settled on some diamonds. A +-.60 F/G VS Premium cut on white gold sounds right up the ally. However, I am new at this whole thing, and all the retail stores I have gone to just don't cut it, as well as offering expensive, low-quality diamonds. Can anyone point me in the right direction, where I can get a good deal, with high quality stones and nice settings? My GF likes the classic, elegant look, and I would like to match the ring later with a five-stone wedding band. So classy and elegent, white gold, .60 (plus or minus), for a girl with long slim fingers (5.5). Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Gaiudo |

And to add to what Belle already provided here's a link to a discussion about smaller diamonds. If you like any of the pics Superidealist posted, perhaps he'll be kind enough to tell you where he found them. http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=15946&forumID=12&catID=&search=1&searchstring= ~~~~~~~~~~ |

I suggest you go to some B&M jewelers in your area and look at loose stones with them. My e-ring is a G SI2 .375 pear, and it's completely eye-clean (no visible inclusions) and very very white to my eyes. If you can go down in clarity from VS to SI1, or you can't detect the color in an H or even an I, you can get a bigger or a better cut stone or a more elaborate setting while still staying in budget. A quick search for a round H&A .5-.7ct, G, VS2 gave a price range from $1399 to $2061, but just decreasing the clarity grading to SI1 dropped the price range to $1318 to $1706. Look at some loose stones in varying clarity and color and see what you like.

Thanks, these are great suggestions. I am currently perusing those websites y'all offered... here is something I came up with, http://www.whiteflash.com/general/ring_builder.aspx I like the setting, and the diamond seems ok... any thoughts on the diamond (E Color, VS2 Clarity $2,032.00)? I really like the Vatche, though I seem to be paying a bit for the name. I'll keep looking. Thanks again. I had to make a decision between paying more for ring or location... I am definately spending some on location. I hope thats the right way to a woman's heart... ![]() Gaiudo

Can't see the result of the ring builder... just the empty page. Could not locate the diamond either! Among the ideal rounds, only a F/VS2 matches somewhat this one but no Es... Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |

Gaiudo....you picked a lovely spot for a proposal. The views from Piazzale Michelangelo are terrific. Since you'll be on that side of the Arno, the Boboli Gardens should be lovely that time of year if you need a plan B. Also, some of the rooms in the Pitti Palace are lush and romantic.

I really like that diamond you showed, Anna. How does that compare to This One? As for the ring, check This Vatche out. This is really helping, by the way. I have already seen a couple rings I could buy today. Thanks for the tips on Florence, Matata. The Gardens also seemed very nice. I had thought about flying up there a week early, just to check out restaurants, vistas, etc. Hopefully end of May-beginning of June are good times. I am trying to avoid the rush.

I hope this isn't a dumb question... on the Intro Page to WF's engagement rings, they have a lovely solitair setting, almost a contour style, but no information about it, just the picture. Does anyone know what that ring is? Thanks

Ok, I think things have kinda come together, thanks to y'alls input. I love this setting by Vatche, and this diamond that Maxine and Ana suggested. Together that comes to $2,750 from WF; I don't know if this ever works, but I wrote then and said I have $2500 to spend, and I would take it today. Lets see if they are agreeable. Thank y'all so very much for your input! It definately gave me great options, and clarified alot of things. I'll let you know how it all turns out! Thanks again, Nick
