Hi all,

I know that I want the following for my girlfriend's engagement ring: 80 - 90 points and princess cut. The rest is kind of up in the air right now. Here is the stone I'm most interested in right now:

Measurements: 5.01 X 4.97 X 3.67
Weight: .80 carat
Depth: 73.8%
Table: 74%
Girdle: Thick to Very Thick
Cutlet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Clarity: VS2
Color: G
Fluorescence: None

Questions:

1. What do you think of this stone?

2. Is $2,600 a good deal for this stone?

3. I've heard very different opinions on depth and table for a princess cut. Some sources have said anything between 64% and 75% is fine. Most recently, I was told that they should be less than 71%, preferably in the mid to high 60s. I'm trying to maximize sparkle and brilliance and all of that -- do I need to go lower than 73.8% depth and 74% table?

4. Which of the following will give me more brilliance and sparkle and beauty with all other things considered equal: 1) E SI1 or 2) G VS2?

I realize that every stone is different and I really have to take a look at each individual stone, but I thought I'd throw these questions out to the experts.

Thanks very much for your help.

Unfortunately, that's all the information I have. What is the significance of the crown height?

A higher crown height will give the diamond it's fire aka rainbow lightflashes like a disco ball.

well, if you refer back to diamond anatomy 101, you will remember that the crown is the area above the girdle.  for a diamond to have some sparkle and depth, you would want it to have some of it's weight up top in the crown, and not all hiding below the girdle.  just like people....beauty is in the eye of the beholder.............have you seen this diamond you speak of?

I just purchased a .83 princess cut from WF.  From what I have read in regards to princess cuts you should look for a table and depth high 60's low 70's with a table less that the depth and a crown of over 9.   I had a hard time finding a high 60's in my price range and went with a  table of 71 and depth 73.9.   and a crown of 9.6. VS2 and D color although they say E,F,G are all still pretty white.  I love the sparkle and colors in my ring, it is a little smaller than I expected but I think this is because princess cuts face up smaller than other cuts of the same size.  I think if you find a princess with a smaller girdle and depth it may face up larger. Mine measured 5.19x5.17x3.82 My depth was still a little larger than what I orginally wanted but It is a very colorful ring.  Do yourself a favor and in the search area on pricescope type in princess and read through the many threads  that come up to give you some ideas.

I've seen it. I thought it was great...until I started lining it up next to larger and more colorless stones.

well, was it the "larger" that was making the other ones better, in your eyes?  the "g" color is not that far off from colorless.........

I'm happy with 80 to 90 points. As for color, I did notice a difference between E and G under the lights against a white background. I'm wondering if its worth paying the premium to go up from G to colorless.

technically, d-e-f are all colorless.  you may be one of those that are very color sensitive.  keep in mind though, unless you will have the stone mounted next to another one of a higher color, you may not notice the difference (and it won't always be next to a white background)

for colour, check out this great pic comparison http://www.goodoldgold.com/color1.htm but I think I am right in saying that because they are from the side and not set in a ring, they show more colour than they would do face up, so the tint won't be so noticeable when it is set and you are looking at it face up.
