The jeweller I am working with is bringing in a diamond for my approval, before I purchase it. Below are the details: GIA Report: Ideal/Ex/Ex I am getting a Sarin report included with this particular diamond. I am also going to use the hearts & arrows viewer. If it matters, it is a Canadian certified diamond. My concern with this particular diamond is the depth. While it falls within the AGS ideal cut range, it seems deep. I have researched, probably a 100 diamonds, and rarely have I seen depths above 62%. Is this something I should be concerned about? Also, are there any other reports I should consider? Another jeweller who I considered working with has the Isee2 machine. Do you think it is worth taking to him for a looksee? Personally, I like technology and am quite fascinated by the machine. Thanks in advance for any help given, Keenan |

62.4% is deep....not over the top deep...but deep nonetheless. A diamond with a 62.4% depth could "appear" to be smaller than one carat. It is possible that this diamond was cut to retain a little weight in the pavillion in order to attain the 1 carat mark and command the premium that this jump in carat weight benefits from. However, you will not visually benefit from this "extra" weight. That said it is worth a look though!

That was my initial thought too. The depth was specifically retained to attain 1 carat. The spread being slightly lower also concerns me. I was going to express this fact to the jeweller. The Sarin report should indentify the critical factor of spread. The jeweller originally quoted me for a diamond of similar characteristics but between the time I was quoted and returned (a few days) the stone was gone. This one is more expensive than the one I originally looked at. I believe the original stone was not ideal cut.

Long story short, I live in Edmonton AB Canada. The jeweller is bringing in the stone from NY. It is currently getting its Cdn certification done (not sure why it went to NY first - clearing house/auction?). So, if all goes well, the diamond will be in on Monday and I will get to view it and the Sarin report in person. I trust the jeweller and he's always been up front with me but the price on this diamond went up about 20% compared to the original one. For the one step increase in cut quality, I don't know if that is worth it/I am getting the same value for my money. When I compare it to diamond prices on the net, I think it is getting on the expensive side. I have no problems supporting a B&M shop, in fact I prefer it, but I don't expect to fund THAT much of his overhead. My one mistake was not thoroughly reviewing their refund policy. I did put down a sizeable deposit on the initial stone but as mentioned, that one was no longer available. He said he would bring this one in for me to approve. As time goes on, I am beginning to get cold feet. I think their policy may be store credit/exchange only.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have all of the information yet unfortunately. I will see if I can get anymore information from him before the diamond and Sarin report come in.

If you put down a substantial deposit on a stone that he can't provide, surely he has to give you your deposit back?

That is certainly my position! I am going to discuss this issue with him tomorrow. I have to go out and about so I am going to chat with him at that point in time. I'll certainly let you know how it goes! I don't know what he will say so I don't want to immediately say he's bad, because he has done nothing so far to make me not comfortable with him. Such a big decision! I am just glad that I am way ahead of the game. I don't even have a date or anything picked out to propose. For once, I am ahead of the game! The salesman can't put a lot of pressure on me because there is no immediacy.

I just wanted to give a quick update and thank everyone again for their help. The diamond had a depth of 62.8%, not 62.4%, even worse. I expressed my concern to the jeweller and after some time understanding each other, he suggested another diamond to me, at the same price. Both diamonds are Canadian certified diamonds. The specs are: GIA: Ideal/Ex/Ex I don't have the angles yet, because the Sarin report will come with the diamond. For reference, the old diamond was as follows: GIA: Ideal/Ex/Ex Again, no Sarin report as the stone isn't in. I was worried about spread and that second stone definitely was smaller in spread! Any comments on the first diamond listed above?
