After looking at quite a few diamonds a couple more questions have arisen. As it stands now, I know that I want to get a round shape diamond brilliant cut. I think I am looking at about .75-.89 carats, as that seems to best fit my budget (esp. when taken into consideration the clarity and color I want), once I get into the settings that I am interested in. What I have questions with is the type of round brilliant cut. Is it merely a matter of preference when it comes to choosing between eighternity, solasfera, standard H&A, Star 129, etc.? It seems like a lot is the preference of the vendor. Is there actually a difference in quality? I don’t have the luxury of going to a B&M, unless someone has a good point of Contact over here in Bahrain (I am wary about buying diamonds in the Gold Souq). I am sure I will have a few more questions as the days/weeks/months roll by, but I am taking it as I go. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Personal preference plays a role here. Since you don't have the luxury of seeing it for yourself...i'd stick with what you know (which is probably the good old 58 facets) A well-cut solasfera or Star 129 can be beautiful, and a standard 58 facet round brilliant that is well cut is beautiful..they are just two different kinds of beautiful...

I'm having the same questions, and have acutally seen a Star 129. The traditional look is the 57 facet stone - and according to Jonathan (Rhino) at GOG an excellent cut H&A traditinal facet stone looks just as good as an Eighternity - but the Eighternity has a different look due to it's 81 facets. I believe it was Storm who commented to me that he thought the Star 129 looked "busy" on the smaller stones (but OK on larger 2 carat stones). I tend to agree - it is a different look. However, it sure has sparkle - and I think they would look great as earrings where sparkle is what it is about. Engagement rings have a tradition behind them. Any idea if your gal is more traditional or would want to tend away from tradition? Perry

I am leaning toward her being more traditional. I know that she wants a simple solitare setting, with nothing else going on. When feeling her out for rings, I mainly focused on the setting, not realizing how much actually goes into picking the diamond itself. She is also not a yellow gold person, so I am looking at platinum settings. As for the diamond itself, I am not too sure. Although we are both like racoons when we see sparkly things: we are just kind of drawn to them. I was mainly curious as to how different the "non-traditional" cuts look.

Unless you're sure she'd prefer otherwise, it's far safer to stick with a traditional round stone.

You're a brave man if you tried looking at diamonds in the gold souk!! There are a number of stores with white gold and I've heard good things about the quality of the craftmanship, but you may get an interpretation rather than a straight copy. You won't find much platinum here in Bahrain unless you go to the Sheraton complex where they have Cartier and Tiffany's etc. There are also other upmarket stores selling loose stones if you wanted to have a look at colour in person (mostly non ideal cuts with some better quality ones in there too). If you got to the Seef Mall there are a more shops in the jewellery end (go past M&S) who advertise that they have loose diamonds or try the Al A'Ali Mall (you can cut through across the carpark and in at the Gucci / British Airways end to get to the jewellery shops). The Lumiere (hearts and arrows) diamond was advertised on the back of August's Bahrain Confidential but I can't remember seeing it in any of the stores. Hope this helps but I'd definitely look at the online stores mentioned on pricescope as you will get complete blankness when you try asking for crown and pavillion angles here. Shopping in Dubai is very similar and I gave up asking for this type of information. If you are lucky the stones will have GIA certificates (have yet to see any with AGS) but most are certified in Brussels. ============================= |
