I am looking for a princess cut diamond, VS1 or VS2.
Color F or G.  1.10-1.25 carats.  Platinum or White Gold.   Depth should be 57% to 74% (right?)

Any idea on how much this diamond should REALLY sell for?  I do not want to get ripped off so I thought I would post here.

A friend I have known since 1st grade, says his dad is great friends with a jeweler but I would still like to make sure I know what the price should be.

Thanks!

JW:

By isself that is a tough question to answer.  Turns out the 4 C's are only the start.  Look arround you and study the rings on gals fingers.   How many of the really sparke in ordinary light.  Few and far between.  Jewelry store lighting can make almost anything sparkle.

This site tends to focus people on what I call the Super Ideal Cuts - diamonds that really sparkle in ordinary light.  If you are really good you can find one at normal diamond prices - on the other hand there are a few vendors here who specialize in such diamons - typically for a small extra markup.

I suggest you go through the tutorial, and brows the forum threads back several weeks for topics related to what is a good diamond.

I also recommend specifically looking at some of the vendors in store selection (typically listed as "prefered selection, signature class, ect." and try to figure out how good of a diamond they are selling you.

Otherwise, you can use the search engine on the home page to find an assortment of all quality of diamonds.  However, just buying a diamond for weight is in my mind like buying an anchor.  It will probably fianancially sink you and never look good.

I've yet to see a nice princess with a depth less than 65. I would aim for 68-72 personally.

I would never go for a diamond with a depth less than 67%! Also, although my diamond is just a hair over 74% in depth (74.1%) and many people would say it's too deep for them (and miss out on a perfect stone!), it's important to pay attention to all the numbers together, not just individually. For instance, you don't want a stone with a table of 60% and a depth of 74%, just as you don't want a stone with a depth of 68% and a table of 75%. You need a stone with numbers that compliment one another, forming the proper pavilion and crown angles. That being said, I personally wouldn't buy a princess cut stone without the crown/pavilion info from a Sarin or similar analysis.
