2.02 F VS2 73% depth 77% table GIA m-vtk no flour. vg symmetry gd 7.20x6.85x5.00 $16450 I am buying for my soon to be fiance. She is less concerned with perfect clarity than color, and size. I don't like the idea of going to an SI1 unless it is really eye-clean and even pretty good under scope. Looks like I can save about 2-3000 by going to SI1. Does the above stone look good for the price? The stone will be in an antique style platinum ring with baguettes and pave. Thanks, everybody. I look forward to getting some advice. |

I guess the first questions is have you seen the stone and how does it look? If you have not seen the stone and are perhaps buying from an internet vendor then you really must get a sarin report on it before you consider making such a large purchase. I really would recommend trying to get a sarin even if you are buying from a local jeweler. That being said, from the numbers you posted I don't particularly like this stone. I would prefer a much smaller table, and you are sacrificing on size due to the variable girdle being very thick in places. One can't go solely by numbers though...if you have seen the stone and it is gorgeous then consider it, but I would personally try to find one with a table smaller than the total depth (or at least smaller than the 77% you have) and with a girdle no larger than slightly thick. This does not gaurantee a winner either and the ultimate test is how it appeals to you personally. The price doesn't seem too out of line. Good luck! Sean

An SI1 stone can be a GREAT purchase, but I'd pass on this stone as well. Not only is the table WAY too big, the other numbers aren't great.

Thanks for all of your help. This stone is from a web vendor, so I have not seen it. I am really just starting my education into princess stones. I found a 73%, 73% stone with a medium girdle at nearly the identical price, everything else very close. I think I need to go see a lot more stones in person before I consider buying over the net.

I would DEFINITELY go see a bunch of stones before buying online. Before I saw a lot of stones in person, I never would have considered getting one that was an I/SI1. But, after seeing some very white I's and 100% eye clean SI's, there was no way I was going to pay for color higher than G or clarity higher than VS1.

I think my biggest issue is that though I have been lookig for a few motnhs now, each b&m store I go to only has a few examples of princesses anywhere near the parameters I am looking for. I have seen some extraordinaryily clean SI1's that I would have bought if the price was better. Since then, though, I have been reading up more on what the table and depth should look like in a princess, and am having a hard time finding ANYTHING that looks good. Ugh. This is going to take even longer than I thought (and I tend to obsess over any decision over a couple hundred bucks) Thanks again for all your help, and if anybody knows of anyplace in particular to look at princess stones, I am all ears.

I would definetely try to look at as many stones as possible...not only will it give you a better idea of what you want in a diamond, but it will also allow you to truly appreciate a well cut stone when you see one. If I were you, I might take a look at these stones (see if the vendor can bring them in and run a sarin...then post the numbers on this forum): stone #1 stone #2 stone #3 Good luck, Sean
