I'll try to make this short...four years ago my hub had a a new e-ring made for me. Set in platinum, a 1.50 carat princess I VS1 center with a pair of .65 total weight half moons (I SI2/I1). The cost was $9300, $6900 for the center stone (EGL cert and 6.33x6.48x4.52 mm) and $2400 for the semi-mount with the half moons already in it. It appraised for $15225. Fast forward to now. The ring suffered a mishap resulting in the loss of a half moonm stone When taking it in for repair it was noted both the other stones were cracked. Filed an insurance claim. The jeweler gave me an estimate for the insurance to base payment on: 1.66 princess H VS2 9925 .56 total wt. half moons I SI2 2400 Labor 500 I haven't seen these stones yet. The ins. co is sending me a check this week and said I can repair or replace the ring or whatever as long as I turn over the cracked stones to them. I'm having a hard time swallowing that diamond prices have increased this much in four years! Did I get a really good deal the first time or am I getting ripped this time, sort of like when you take a car to the shop for an ins. estimate? I am thinking of taking my business elsewhere, or else getting the stones online and only having them set the stones for me; I think these prices look out of line. I loved my old ring so much. My hub looked at four jewelers, and at least 15 stones at the one we used before he picked one. We didn't know all this stuff about tables and depths and stuff, but it was a good-looking stone with a lot of sparkle, very clean. Hardly ever met anyone who did not comment on how gorgeous my ring was. Help? Oh, one last thing...since apparently I am the world's clumsiest human...should I not be wearing a princess cut? The jeweler mentioned (after the fact!) they are more likely to break than any other cut. Before this, I had no idea a diamond COULD crack. If diamond e rings are only menat to be worn out to dress up, I may just replace with a cz and keep the money (sigh). |

I don't know if those prices are out of line, but I'm not sure why you are upset. Are you saying that you don't believe that your jeweler's stones are those prices and he inflated them? I see a 1.63 H SI1 at SuperbCert for $9300 so maybe prices HAVE gone up. It sounds like you are not obligated to use the same jeweler as before. Get the check and shop around a bit. Look at various stones online too and then decide who you want to go with.

Sahmama, I'm in the same boat as you! I had a 1.44ct E-VS2 marquise that I bought 3 yrs ago for $6,000., it was recently lost or stolen, & I'm trying to replace it & finding prices between $8k & 10k. I just hope your insurance co is giving you A LOT more than mine did! GOOD LUCK!!! Tara |

Yes, I do think they are overcharging. I think they figure because it's "the insurance company's " money and out of my personal pocket they can get by with it. The whole situation makes me feel weird, yet the jeweler has a good rep in town and is one of the "approved" jewlers in this area for my ins. co.'s estimates.

Sahmama, Sorry if I misread your post. It sounds like you are comparing apples and oranges (1.5c I vs. 1.66c H). You are now going up 11% in size and a color grade. Your 1.5 I VS1 EGL was bought for $6900 four years ago On PS, you can find numerous 1.5 I VS1 EGL stones for $7.1-8.5k. Picking $7.7k, you've seen an $800 price increase (3% annually) On PS, a 1.65 H VS2 EGL goes for $9.2-9.6k. I also found a 1.7 for 8.3k and another for $11.5k (wide range) It doesn't sound like your jeweler is overcharging on the center stone and his price is close to your original for the sides. Why not go back to a 1.5c I color on your center? You might also ask if I clarity on sides will help on cost. Todd(aka Ricardo, aka Cowboy) |
