Hi, I've got a GIA report for an F/VS2 1ct diamond that has the following comment: Laser groove is not shown Does any one what this means? Is it a bad thing? Thanks

I will take a guess that the stone was "grooved" so that it might be set into some sort of mounting that is called "invisibly set" in style. They cut a narrow groove in the pavilion, parallel to the girdle, but just below it and use that groove for the prong or wire to fit into and thereby to hold the stone in place. It could be a single groove or opposing sides or even four grooves. They probably are invisible from the top.....Now, this is all speculation, but it could be what is being mentioned.

On a 1.00 ct diamond, I am guessing that they removed a surfaced or near surfaced dark inclusion, using a laser to cut or groove to the inclusion and then using acids to dissolve it. I have not heard of this comment before and would be very curious to hear what GIA has to say. Brian Knox |

Ususally a comment describes something that is not a grade maker (e.g. pinpoints not shown when other larger inclusions are) or there is little else shown on the polt and the comment is the grade maker - (eg clouds not shown). I expect the groove would either not show on the plot (eg on the girdle) or was so small (on a VS2) that its only reason to be mentioned is for later identification purposes. I would not be concerned - if you can see the stone then ask to be shown under magnification - or buying unseen then as usual - use an appraiser :) Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |
