SYR Rough Rock Total Posts: 32 Last Post: 2/6/2007 Member Since: 10/29/2004	I had my heart set on a radiant cut but now my jeweler says they are hard to find because the demand is low. He says he can find me a rectangular princess cut. is there a such thing and are they worth as much as a radiant cut? Please help. I have a radiant cut that he has brought for me but I think the price is too high. 2.63 ct for 24K. I need to decided ASAP. Any help is appreciated. SYR

icelady Ideal Rock Total Posts: 1,030 Last Post: 10/21/2006 Member Since: 11/25/2003	Hi SYR, I think you will find that a rectangular Princess cut diamond will look very different from a Radiant. Princess cuts tend to be more precise looking, and Radiants have that cracked ice look. Both have their attributes, but are very different looking in my opinion. The 2.63 ct Radiant at 24K, what are the specs on this one. Depending on the color, clarity, and cut, 24K may not be bad. Have you seen this diamond? If so, what did you think?? Good luck! icelady

Its an "original radiant cut". I am hesitating because my jeweler says they are not in demand and so as far as resale there wont be demand if I ever wanted to trade up. SYR

Princess cut faceting and proportioning does not work well in a rectangular shape. If your jeweler is telling you that 2.5 carat well cut radiants are hard to find because they are not popular, he is lying to you. A well cut 2.50 G SI1 radiant is a very easy seller. Are you sure the problem isn't that the store can't make enough money on the sale to cover the cost of their "buy-back" guaranty?

I think that is the issue. My current ring will have to be taken back and he I think he isnt happy with this. I was told radiants are not very popular or desired by many. They are in low demand and they would be hard to sell. He is also having difficulty getting me one with a GIA cert. I dont know what to do anymore. If I dont work with him I lose thousands of dollars on my trade. SYR

The profit they made on the first sale is already in their pocket, and they will not throw it back into the kitty. If they don't make money twice, why should they bother with the second transaction. It sounds as if the Jeweler doesn't want you to buy the stone you saw. This is probably the sale won't generate enough cash flow for him to pay for it, so he'll end up with negative cash flow from the transaction. He'd rather get you a rectangular princess which will cost him way less money, so he won't get hurt by the trade in. If I were you, I'd shop somewhere else, and just try to get as fair a price as you can on the trade. If you got screwed on the original purchase it's already done, and the money is already lost.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks he has access to a rect princess that he hasn't been able to sell.

I was never told that the EGL lab was in Antwerp and that it was cut more like a 1.87 ct I color. Ever since I found out I have been wanting to get rid of it. I have tried to be a politician with him and just get him to honor what he had originally said. He said he would give me what I paid for the ring if I traded up. So I found this diamond and asked him to get it for me. I already knew what the wholesale price is so he is only charging me 1K above that but it is still high. He all of a sudden seemed very agravated by me. He had originally said a 2.5 ct would cost me around 19K. Come to find out now that he meant another EGL cert and not a great cut like I asked for. I dont think that is being pickey to ask for a well porportioned cut. He also told me this would be the last trade and I would have to pay either cash or certified funds because he doesnt want to pay the credit card companies another 2%. I have gotten estimates from other jewelers and they only want to give me 4K less that I bought the diamond. I am stuck and mad. I dont know what to do. SYR

Moosewendy seems to hit the nail on the head in this case. I totally agree. he is not going to get much profit from a branded stone being sold to you, because of the fact that he probably got that stone at a higher price himself (versus the crappy rectangular princess he is trying to pawn off on you). EGL is too lax in their grading compared to GIA, so in general GIA certified stones get a premium for their stones. God, I would be very firm with this man, but I guess I also am what they call in the industry "a pain in the @$$" so that man would do the sale just to shut me up, if that were me!!! Let us know how it goes, and I am really sorry to hear about your problem. As you will notice, radiants are becoming more popular here (and are quite popular in general for colored diamonds), but a rectangular princess is just not an easy find on purpose... GOOD LUCK!!! SYR, Maybe I am missing something here. Did you buy the princess cut you have from this vendor? Is there actually a .15ct descrepancy? 2.02 vs 1.87, or does the stone weigh 2.02 and just look like a 1.87ct? It is my understanding that a color grade can be off by one, but a difference in weight of the stone should not be that far off without you having a claim against him. Maybe the experts can speak to that. The other thing I am confused about is that the vendor said he could get you a 2.5 ct Radiant for 19K, but you asked for him to bring in a 2.63 BRANDED Radiant which is going to cost more anyway. I think that 24K (with only 1K profit for the vendor) for a 2.63 ct Original Radiant Cut (well cut) diamond is not out of line. Good luck and keep us posted. icelady
