There are two things I need help with. First, and most important, I was hoping y'all who are much smarter than I am about diamonds could give me your opinion about this stone. Just so you know what I am looking for in general: I have around a $10,000 budget for an engagement ring. I have been told that the ring and mounting will be around $1000, leaving around $9000 to buy the prettiest, sparkliest, best cut, largest stone I could find. Priorities were in order: cut, carat, color, quality. I was willing to go as low as i on color and an eye-clean SI1 to be able to afford the best cut and maximize the size. I have a GIA cert and Sarin on the following stone: 1.406 ct F SI1 VG polish and VG symmetry (GIA) diam. 7.15mm (7.13-7.17)x4.47 depth 62.5% crown 35.4 16.0% 0 pavil. 40.8 42.7% 0 table 3.94mm 55.1% 0 culet 0.2% none 0 girdle 2.0% (1.7-2.4)% My HCA question is: why do I get an HCA of .7 when I put in the crown and pavillion % but an HCA of 2.4 when I use the angles?! My opinion question is: should I buy this stone for $8900 |

Hi there, From what I have read on the HCA, it is more accurate when you use the angles so.. As far as the stone...Have you seen it in person? Do you like it? I put a lot of stock into everything on pricescope, the knowledge here is phenomenal..but one thing is often overlooked when all the mathematical stuff is put ahead of everything else.... If you see a stone that you love and that you think sparkles it's little A** off, do all the mathematical equations in the world mean anything. There are people here happy with K color, SI2 stones while others are not happy until they receive a D FL stone? It is after all a matter of personal choice... Your gf will not see the mathematical data behind the stone. So my advice to you is that it is imperative to have all the data on a stone, this protects you from buying something that is not *good* but if you see the stone and it speaks to you but *only* has a score of 2.4, you shouldn't let this affect your decision!

%'s are favored by dinosaurs in the industry from days when they did visual estimation - but the way digital scanners measure today - angles are more accurate. The angles win - there is stuff about it on the page you used. Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |

thank you for the discussion about the difference in the HCA. Does anyone have an opinion to help me out with respect to your opinion of the stone and whether $8900 is a good price?

I think $8900.00 for that size & color is a very good price. A score of 2.4 is also favorable. It's just outside of excellent but lets face it could be a lot worse. I've looked up AGS 000 stones with 3.9 & 6's much to my disappointment. I think theres another thread that someone received a score of 2.4 on their diamond & bought it & loved it. I'm sure your girl will be happy with that color & size!
