I just got engaged!!! My fiance gave me a gorgeous Elara diamond. It is 1.21 carats, D, and VS1. He gave it to me as a solitaire, and it looks great!!! Originally, we had discussed had talked about getting the diamondwith two half moons. What do you guys think? I love half moons, but since my fiance got me such a gorgeous center stone, I am scared that I would take away from the stone. When you have a special center stone--- should you keep it as a solitaire? Please help!!!!!!

Ha! I'm having the same issue. But I have !!!! made a decision....I am keeping it as a solitaire. I love looking at people's interesting and beautiful settings, but there is something special about a solitaire as well. Someone said to me...it makes a 'statement'! (what that statment is I don't know LOL)...So I'm going solo!!! (but working on a nice band tho)

yup! same issue here too. like moremoremore, i decided to keep it a solitaire. i ALWAYS wanted sidestone and my hunny was vehemently against them. because he humors me, we tried the stone in various settings with and without side stones. ultimately, for us, the center stone looked so much better as a solitaire. i suggested seeing your stone in different settings before making a decision.

Congrats, RedKen1!!! I wish you both great happiness. ![]() I think it depends on the diamond, the sidestones and the setting. We originally set my diamond with sapphire side stones, but we found that it did detract from the center stone. When we covered up the sidestones with our fingers, the diamond just popped, whereas with the sidestones visible, it faded back. So we decided that this diamond needed a solitaire setting. However, I have seen settings with sidestones that really complimented (complemented?) the center stone beautifully. I think it's a good idea to consider your particular stone and tastes, and try it with various settings. Good luck!

For our 15th anniversary my husband gave me a diamond....finally!!! I originally had planned to get a Princess and flank it with two emeralds that I own, but I needed at least a 2ct or larger diamond for the proportions to be what looked right to me, since each emerald is around 1 ct. Hubby wouldn't spring for the large stone, sooooooo...we chose a 1.12 RB with RB side stones that are .30 each. When we picked the stone, we looked at it in several differnt types of settings. The three stone setting just won me over. I'm fortunate that the side stones match the center perfectly in color and clarity and really are a compliment. I just had to have that little extra sparkle Now if I can just get a Facets shared prong eternity band to go with it ![]()

If the sidestones are also diamonds, and you don't go much more than 30 points each (next to your 1.21 stone), sidestones would be beautiful. I had the same concern......we bought a 1.25 stone and I wanted side stones (aquas). I ditched the aqua idea because of wanting the option to steam-clean my diamond. I decided instead upon diamonds, and I stayed to 30 points. I wouldn't go much larger.....and in fact, 25 points may have showcased the center stone even more. The point is to complement, but not overwhelm or upstage. I have to say my entire ring is much more commanding this way, and it really does show off my center stone. I'd vote for adding the side stones. _____________________ |

Redken1, Congrats to you on your engagement and receiving such a spectacular diamond! Personally, I think that if you have a fabulous stone (as you do!), NOTHING can take away from it. But, it is really personal preferance and I think the advice given by Luvn2oxfd about trying your stone in different setting scenarios is the best advice. I am a huge three-stone fan, so that is my cup of tea. I tried the solitaire route but felt that something was "missing". What I would suggest, however, is that you pair your stone with side stones of a different shape. For example, for the Elara, I would flank it with either trillions or faceted trapezoids (as opposed to smaller Elaras on each side). Having a different shape side stone makes the center stone not get "lost".

Congratulations on your engagement. Like others have said. It is truly a personal decision. I thought that I would love sidestones because it would be more carat weight. However, when I looked at diamonds with side stones (all shapes) I decided that it looked to...what's the word..well, clunky for me. However, I found that small diamonds in a channel, bead set, or beautiful pave added to the overall sparkle factor of the entire ring.. Hope this helps...

Thanks you guys. I think what I am going to do is ask the jeweler to bring in the stones, and I am going to look at them next to my ring- to really see how they interact. I like postponing my decision anyway!!! any opinion on types of sidestones for a 1.21 carat? i am thinking half moons or trapezoids.

We ordered pears as sidestones for the 1.34 E RB center stone. I just never liked solitaires (though the gorgeous engraved or pave ones almost swayed me).

I like side stones as long as they don't compete with the center stone. For example, I have side stones in my e-ring but they are only .15, .10, and .10 on each side. This way, the center stone is enhanced by the side stones. I would not have chosen say pears for my side stones. I am not a 3 stone ring person although they can be very beautiful also. 3 stone rings tend to overwhelm my size 3.75 finger.

As you saw, I posted earlier to think about trills or the traps... you mention the traps or the HALF MOONS -- GREAT idea! I think you have a lot of options with your Elara and you'll either be "bit" by the side stone bug when you see the "right" ones flanked against your stone and you'll just "know", or it won't be your "thing". I was very skeptical about trills with my round center, as I had a previous all round three-stone and was partial to it (and still am!) but my DH loved the trills and when I saw what a great job my jeweler could do with setting them totally flush against my round (I saw another client's ring that was completed) something came over me and I was sold! I think the difficult part for you will be having to make the choice, as so many options will be fabulous with your beautiful diamond (good problems to have!). Enjoy the "hunt"
