I'm still new to this diamond mumbojumbo -- can anyone help?? First Question: What is Melee? Is that a cut of diamond, if so can someone show me a picture and give me a good description? Second Question: I recently saw an asscher listed on Icestore.com for which Cut Quality was rated "Antique". What does that mean? Thanks!!

Melee - is a term used for smaller diamonds up to 0.20 carat. So a bit smaller than 1/4 carat size which is a 0.25. I am not sure about your other question but there are different antique cuts such as oldminer cut, old european cut, but asscher is a fancy cut shape. Asscher in its correct term was used by the Asscher company whose decendants now have a branded cut called Royal Asscher. It may just mean that in general the style of cut is antique as I have heard being said recently about the new fashion briolette (like crystal chandelier drop) as it was apparently around in the 1920s and has since been revived. Regarding the Asscher company some people like the old cut asscher as opposed to the new Royal Asscher but you would need to check if that is the same as Icestore are selling. I have heard that an Asscher is sometimes sold under different guises such as the square emerald cut which is different. A search on the forum should bring up a lot about asscher as they have been popular recently.

The listing at Icestore gives no explanations... and there is no standard practice for what to call "antique cut". I second what Pyramid says, but only Icestrore can tell you for sure what they mean by this term. Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." http://www.icestore.com/search/diamond_inventory_detail.asp?ID=212 The stone is really not what I'm looking for anyway because it's more rectangular than square, but I was definitely curious about the cut quality of "antique".

I wish Icestore had more asscher pictures, because even in their Finished Work area I have yet to see the kind of true octagonal stone I'd demand in an asscher. I know Whiteflash has some really nice octagonal ones.
