Comments from Rapaport News today... "The total value of the latest sight from De Beers Group's Diamond Trading Co. (DTC), which is taking place from October 25-29, is estimated at around $450 million, down from $650 million at the last sight, sightholders said. No price increases were reported." "They added that prices rose 3%-4%, with goods appearing to be expensive across the board. However, one client said the quantities offered were substantially better than at the last sight." Todd L. Date: 10/29/2004 3:40:17 PM Author:niceice The market is tight, it has been tight and will continue to be tight as long as the DTC and other distributors continue to hold back diamond rough in an attempt to control pricing. This has been 'the game' forever and we expect it to continue... So, such large fluctuations of supply from one sightolding to the next are usual (expected) ? I had a saleswoman in a B&M tell me that DeBeers is holding back diamonds because Debeers would be opening their own stores in the US in the near future, and they want to be able to offer the best selection. Does anyone else know of this?

I personally don’t see much price movement, The rough market is still pretty soft, with a large cutting overcapacity, the Indian sight holders have been resisting the increases. Dealer to dealer premiums on rough are lower than usual. We notice there is still a lot of rough in the market from the last two sights. What is interesting is this sight has substantially better quality material.

Does anyone else know of this? There is a De Beers store opening on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Is the offer on sighting related to whatever stock there is left on the pipeline, or just the price trend ? For some commodities this is traditionally known, is this the case for rough diamonds ? Guy's dont worry about not finding the diamond of your dream, there are loads of goods waiting to enter the consumer market, unless offcourse you would be intrerested in buying a 3 carat and above of good quality (H+- VS2+) thats where the shortages START showing. De Beers lowered their quantity output, simply because at the wholesale/dealer level inventory is tremendously high, and at tremendously high prices. Demand by manufacturers is weak, and so far the consumers are not jumping on what they want or see. De Beers holds of by releasing only 2/3 of the regular quantity's to the market, and at the same time making sure the prices will stay stable. In my oppinion the prices of polished diamonds will not go up in the short term, on the contrary it will soften a little and stable around 5-7% from the high prices we saw in the last 10 months. ********************** |
