Hello everyone. I'm in need of some advise. I will be receiving an E-ring as a gift for my soon to be wife, from a family member living overseas. I'm sure the diamond has doesn't have a cert and I don't know any of the diamond spec except that it is 1 carat. I'm planning on having the diamond remounted on a platinum ring. My question is, how would I know if the jeweler who was doing the remounting would not do a switch-a-roo with a lesser quality diamond?

Is it possible to get it appraised before you have it mounted? If you find an appraiser who will plot out the inclusions for you as part of the appraisal, you will have proof of how your diamond looks under magnifaction.

Upon receipt of the diamond, go to some appraiser that you trust and get a detailed report. See if you can identify the diamond from its inclusions, cut style and weight. Then, if you shoudl leave it with a jeweler, you can ask for a good receipt and be able to re-identify the diamond once it is set in the ring you have chosen.
If the stone cannot be re-identified by you, why not have the girdle laser inscribed so that you know it is your diamond simply by finding the inscription.
None of this is totally fraud proof, but both methods will go a long way in preventing any problems. Most jewelers are honest, hard working, and not get rich quick scammers. I know people believe everyone is a crook, but it just isn't the case. Meanwhile, knowing your diamond and obtaining a very thorough reciept when you leave it for setting, will give you peace of mind and make a crook hesitate to cheat you....

My appraisal costs about 80$ American dollars.. Not sure about the conversion rates from US to Canadian. No idea about laser inscription...
