My boyfriend and I decided that it was time to start the engagement ring search. I went to Robbins a while ago with a friend and found a gorgeous Scott Kay setting that I absolutely fell in love with. My question now is the setting was $1875 (around that) and I don't think my boyfriend wants to spend anymore than 4000 on the ring. I really would like a round diamond that is .65-.80 in size and a D-G in color since it's going to be set in platinum. My question is can I get the diamond from an online vendor and have Robbins set it for me or would that cost too much? What are my options to keeping under our budget?

You can set an H color diamond in platinum and it will be beautiful! I've seen it in person myself and save money that way. You should call Robbins and ask them directly.

Hmmm...there are other options as well. She could ask a vendor whose on-line reputation is good what s/he can get for her using that same Scott Kay setting and a $4,000.00 budget. If she specifies the parameters on which she doesn't wish to compromise (be they cut, color, size, or clarity) she will then know the best she can do on the other parameters. I offer this advice NOT because I dislike the idea of an H in platinum but simply because, if it were my call, I might choose to do something other than go to an H. Also: a bricks and mortar store may or may not have prices competitive with on-line vendors posting here who know that people here are thinking through their purchases and have choices. HI I am having a band made by Robbins and I supplied the diamonds (from GOG) they will let you supply the diamond...and you can usually get the diamond cheaper on-line... You might want to check with on-line vendors to see if they can get you the Scott Kay setting as well... diane diane |

Certainly *some* on-line vendors will carry Scott Kay. Maybe all of them have access to that line. I don't know how Scott Kay works: whether it has only authorized vendors or will sell to anyone in the trade. One-stop shopping (which I DO NOT do when I am having *custom* work done) will be cheaper than buying a diamond from one vendor and an already-made setting from another. Each vendor has to make a profit. Deb A Girl's Best Friend |
