Hello - Just curious on your thoughts. I am getting a new setting shortly, so this is not a setting I will keep however.... My solitare setting - 4 prong, platinum, knife edge, for 1.5 ct RB was sized to fit my finger. The cut in the platinum where the sizing was done - directly at the bottom of the ring, has been visible lately - like "dirt" made the cut stand out. I clean it regularly - and it doesn't really bother me. HOWEVER - my fiance noticed that it was rough feeling there. AND then we noticed that it had come apart! Basically, the ring sits fine- and the bottom edges do meet and are together(like the ring should be). But if you apply moderate pressure either sideways are to pull apart - it is clear that they are not connected. But normally they sit flush together (no visible space normally). So my question is, will this affect the integrity of the prongs / diamond? Should I not wear the ring at all because of this? I don't want to worry / or pay the expense of getting this particular issue fixed right now, as I am getting a brand new setting in a matter of weeks. But I am curious of your thoughts. THANKS !!! Laney, A broken sizing seam is not likely to jeopardize your stone but it can pinch you and it can cause a snag that will damage your clothing. Whoever did the sizing should be willing to repair it for you for free. If they aren't available, it shouldn't be more than $50 to fix at a local platinumsmith. The jeweler should fix the seam for free if you are near to them. If not most jewelers can fix it for about $25. Up to you whether the money or the break is more important. Plat is better to weld the seam at the bottom than to solder it, for future ring sizing. In other words, the two sides of the ring are fuzed together with no other material in the seam.

Thank you both. I appreciate your responses. I figured it would be an easy fix, but I'm so close to a new setting. If there is any delay at all, I'll get in the car and get the seam fixed. I'm sure the shop will repair it with no problem. Thanks again! Laney |
