A few years ago, I lost a diamond in one of my earrings & the insurance company went through a particular jeweler to replace them. We were very impressed with the customer service & quality of the stones that we received from this person.

My mom still receives flyers in the mail from this jeweler. I sent an email to him saying that my boyfriend & I are in the process of diamond shopping & asked if he would sell us a diamond (and take an old family ring in trade). The jeweler said that since we were customers from the insurance company, we would receive the insurance company price for a new diamond.

Of course I'm excited about this--but I am being naive? Are insurance company prices really lower?

slgbug1,

The biggest reason for a jeweler to do business with the insurance companies is because it helps them to build a customer base. The IC's don't actually pay very well, their slow, claims are a pain in the rear, and there are a whole host of other issues. It's not a great business. What this all tells you is that this jeweler is willing to work hard to develop and retain a valuable customer, they are honest (IC's are extremely picky about this), and that they're smart. These are all good things! By all means, give them a shot. As far as the prices go, there is a decent chance that they will be pretty good. Smart jewelers don't gouge their customers.
