hi everyone. I just got my ring back after having a new head put on and I LOVE it. It looks so beautiful. but I do have a question. should the prongs be touching the diamond? the diamond looks like it is in these groves on each prong and the tip is just covering the diamond not quite touching it this is a platinum head. thanx for any help. ![]()

Can you post a picture? it's hard to tell.. what you call the "tip" may not be the image in our heads! ![]()

I wish I could. But lets see if I can explain a little better. Ok, say you have a 4 prong setting and the straight part of the prong if you will is what surronds the diamond then at the top of the prong the part that curves over the diamond thats the part I am calling the tip. I hope this help. Sorry.

Bogus, Yes, the prongs should all be touching the stone. Hold it up to the light and look edgewise down the girdle at that little notch in the prong with a loupe. You should not be able to see any light between the crown of the stone or the end of the prong. You should also not see light between the pavilion and the bottom side of the notch. You should be able to run the table of the stone across a nylon stocking or a silk tie in every direction without snagging the fabric. All visible surfaces should be polished but the standard of ‘high’ polish is usually a little lighter on places like the inside of prongs. The stone should be tight in the setting and you should not be able to move it with your fingernail even the tiniest bit. If it fails any of these checks, go back to the jeweler and complain. If they insist that it’s ok and you still feel that it isn’t, go to an independent appraiser. They should be able to help you determine if there is anything wrong. thanx for your response. The diamond is in very well it isnt going anywhere and it dosnt snag except for when I am dryng it with a cotton diaper cloth the threads are not tight and grab at the prongs so I will take it back and have him fix it. I dont think it will be a problem. Veronica Sampson |
