Hi I just submitted a question, but I don't think it went through so here I go again.... I am new to the site, but have found there seem to be a lot of knowledgeable people here, so I was hoping I could get some advice from some of you experts! I have done a ton of research trying to help my boyfriend choose a ring for me. I want to make sure he doesn't get scammed and gets what he pays for and that we end up with something very nice. We recently bought something (and we are withing our return time frame) and now after countless hours of research I am concerned because the diamond only has a GIA cert and therefore I really have no way of knowing whether the cut is decent. I asked my boyfriend to call the jeweler to request a sarin report and they told him they didn't know what he was talking about. This concerns me greatly since this jeweler is in the jewelers building in boston and has been around for many years. I would like to give him the benefits of the doubt and think that maybe he misunderstood.... but it concerns me. i checked them out on the BBB and saw no problems. How will I ever know if the diamond is a good cut without having a sarin report? I just bought an idealscope and am waiting for it's arrival. Should I have asked to only see AGS certified stones which provide the crown and pavilion depth information... I am very concerned about this. Another concern is that they do their own appraisals and "surprisingly" it appraised for 3 grand more than we paid. this seems like a conflict of interest and doesn't make me feel confident, but i feel like how can i get an independent appraiser because they are going to need to remove the stone from the setting and i assume that will cause a problem with the jeweler i bought it from and probably another charge to reset. what is the best way to get a report or get the information I need to determine the cut? Is it crazy that I just took their appraisal without requiring our own independent? will an indepenent appraiser get a sarin report? final question... i got a platinum band, but they coat it with rhodium to make it shiny.... how now is this really any different than the white gold since both will now probably need to be replated? the only thing that makes me feel good is the prongs being strong..... Thanks for your help!!! |

I can only reall yanswer one portion of your post. The diamond does not have to be loose in order to take it to an Independant Appraiser. Look up some names in your city here on pricescope and make an appt. I just took my new E-ring into the appriaser this week after it had been set and shipped to me. Everything turned out great!

Wow, many items to talk about. First, if a guy has been in business for that long, maybe he is very good at what he does. The reality is that most diamond dealers and most jewelers do not have a sarin machine. Not knowing, a little surprising, but maybe just a little behind the times a bit. My parents can not figure out their DVD but are not dumb. Since you have a GIA cert, an independent appraiser is a good idea. Not a big fan of self appraisals, but it was the norm not that many years ago. Good jewelers also did appraisals. I would not try to second guess so much, and use your resources to see if what he has is good enough to buy, if not there is no shortage of opitions.

TLS, Independent appraisers are sometimes a little hard to find but there is one in most major US markets. You can use the look up feature at the top of this page to see if there is one in your town. There are also quite a few that aren’t in that directory and there are several of us that do work for out of state clients. Ask the people here on the forum or just check Google or your hometown yellow pages. You should be able to work this out without too much trouble. I agree, you should have an appraisal done by someone who is selected by you, not the seller, and who is not otherwise part of the transaction. The Sarin machine will only work on unmounted stones. If you really really want the sarrin information, the stone will need to be taken out of the setting and then reset when they’re done. This may be rather easy and inexpensive and it may be a substantial chore depending on the details of your setting. Your appraiser should be able to give you a straight answer bout whether this is a realistic option. Not every appraiser has a Sarin, by the way, but most can arrange to get it done by outside suppliers if you let them know that this is important to you. They can also make a pretty good estimate of the cut information based on how it looks in the setting. We do this all the time on mounted goods. The ideal-scope will give you a pretty good idea if you have a decent cut. At the least, it should give you an idea if you should be concerned. ---------------- I just posted something about Marty on a different thread...you say you're in Boston; Marty Haske is in Brookline 20 minutes away and is one of the best appraisers in the business. He doesn't have a Sarin machine but I'd be confident in his analysis of your stone.
