Hi,

I am a complete newbie to diamonds but have been trying to educate myself online since I plan to propose to my girlfriend in December. We have been dating for 6 years & I have no doubt that she will accept.

Could anyone suggest some reputable online vendors where I can get a nice ring? I'd like to spend $1000 or so (I'm young & poor) on a white gold setting & a nice solitaire or one with side stones. I have checked out diamonds.com & bluenile.com & I like the 'build your own ring' option they offer.

I must admit I am apprehensive about buying jewelry online & have been advised against it by my brother-in-law (no, hes cool). However, after reading through some posts here it seems there are alot of intelligent people buying & selling diamonds on the internet. Could I get a little help here?

Thanks!

Lee 420,

There are quite a few top knotch vendors that sell here. Make up some specs for a diamond and search on the front page of pricescope. This will get you a list of people that have stones that meet your specs. Each will contain a link to their own website. You can also browse through the forums and look for discussions by someone with a style you like. It's usually pretty easy to tell who the dealers by their posts and they normally include a link to their sites at the end of the post.

By the way, nothing wrong with being young and poor. It beats the hell out of old and poor.

Do not worry about buying on the internet. It is the future and it is here.

Blue Nile is very well known and reputable. Of course there are other vendors listed on the PS website just as good - or better. These include Good Old Gold, Nice Ice, Winfield’s, White Flash, and many others. See the main page for a list of E-vendors.

Also realize that many of these E-Vendors offer some great things - including:

- Allowing you a week (or two) to inspect and evaluate your diamond before you make a final decision to purchase (you just pay for shipping to your home/office). You can use this time to look at the diamond and/or have an independent appraiser (don’t go to your local jewler!) examine it for you.

- Most will give you a GIA (or equal) certificate with the diamond (alot of mall stores don't have these for their diamonds)

- Price is usually better (don't forget - no taxes!)

- Quality is usually better

- Many of the e-vendors offer free shipping

- Some of the e-vendors offer 1 year buy backs (%) and/or life time upgrades. The life time upgrade option is a nice feature when you are "young and poor" - and think sometime you may be "older - and not so poor" and may want to get a larger diamond.

If you stick to a simple three stone mounting, like Stuller 12649 (you can see this at www.stuller.com) you could get a nice stone of H&A cut of just under a half carat in something like an I-SI1 with two .15ct stones complete for just under $1,300.

If you went with a solitaire you could have the stone and the ring for just under the $1,000 that you are looking to spend. That would be with a H&A cut of just under .50ct. If you wanted a higher color color, then you could go down a little in size and still have a dazzling ring.

There are a lot of vendors on this board who can make this happen for you!

I just go tmy ring from Dirtcheapdiamonds.com and had a wonderful experience with them. And the diamonds was more beautiful than I could have imagined. The prices were great and they had quite a few options with regards to settings at a reasonable price.

I spoke with Henry at Whiteflash numerous times and he was very helpful, courteous and patient with me. I would highly recommend either of these vendors based on personal experience.

Check out the websites from several of the online vendors. You can also "build your own engagement ring" if you choose from their settings they feature online. I find BlueNile to be a little higher in price so look around carefully before you order. I also bought from DirtCheap and like LGail had a good experience.

You are quite welcome Josh. I dealt with you and Jennifer BTW. I recommended a Signature Series diamond I saw on your site on another thread and after I found it started thinking that the price was so good that maybe I'll have to snatch it up for myself!!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Denise from White Flash! While there are several vendors I would work with (e.g., GOG, Nice Ice, Wink/Winfields, DCD), WF seemed to have the best policies and the cheapest prices for a company that does not drop ship diamonds. And the service Denise provides...it's unparalleled. My now fiancé and I felt completely comfortable buying a 3.22 ct stone from them and couldn't be happier with it!

I just received my custom ring from Whiteflash yesterday. I also worked with Denise whose judgment I would trust 150%. All I can say is Denise is the GREATEST. Whiteflash will look at your diamond and not just drop ship like a lot of the vendors plus you can have it sent out to an independent appraiser. There are a lot of good vendors and you can find many reviews on this site but my personal choice is Whiteflash.
