I just bought a ring from a local jeweler (happens to be someone we've known for years) I got a ring, but no paperwork with it. Its not that I don't trust him, but is this weird? He was very helpful and made sure to work with my budget.

I got

.52ct
round cut
S1
H color
14kt white gold ring

all this for a $1000. (it was originally 1200, but he gave me a discount)

any opinions?

I think you got a great deal, if you got the diamond you paid for.

I happen to be looking at a practically identical diamond--.56 RB, H, SI1, ideal cut, and the diamond alone is $1500.

If you're happy with it, I'd leave it alone. If it's going to bug you, get it appraised, but don't be surprised if the gemologist doesn't agree with the jeweler's assesment!

I got my .52 ct.
RB color-G and Clarity SI1 for 1,500 and after we got it, I found a bunch of other jewelers selling about the exact specification and size for $900 WITH the certification papers...Mine is certified but It's odd, maybe it's because it was the diamond alone. But mine came with a 14K YG cathedral band...I guess it depends, sounds good to me but I'd be more confident with certification papers, definitely...

It is not impossible to find a certified diamond of these sepcs, and it is more likely that an inetrnet seller will offer diamonds of even less than 0.5 cts with papers since these will be chosen based on stats more than anything.
The price looks right and perfectly feasible for the stone and the setting was given away - there are many 14k models worth even less than 200 and sellers would sometimes "thow in" less expensive settings like that with a diamond sold "loose".

Go as much below those 50 points as you went above and finding an alternative becomes sttraightforward. These diamonds could well be at lest as large as the current, unless your stone is already shallow cut.

For example THIS diamond or THIS and this setting woudl work it out nicely, but not necesarily any better or worse than the piece you are holding, IMO.

shohusoh,

You might consider getting an independent appraisal done on your new ring. It actually sounds like you got a pretty good deal but it is often good to have the paperwork. This will save you the stress of wondering about your purchase as well as provide documentation that will allow your insurance company to replace it properly in the case of a loss. Try to get the appraisal done at a place that doesn't buy or sell diamonds so that there isn't a conflict of interest with the selling jeweler. There is a link at the top of the page to help you find an appraiser in your community.
