Hello all, I have a dilemna. I have been looking at diamonds and doing research for a couple months. Me and my g/f have been looking at mostly settings and different size stones. Today i found out she was going to this jeweller in our area where i will be purchasing the stone from. It is gonna be a surprise i have not told bout where and when i am getting it. She went with her best friend and i let the jeweller know that she was coming so he could show her some diamonds that i am considering. He showed her a range from .5-.7 AGS IDEAL CUT CDN stones. i have pretty much picked the stone i want. it is a .778 AGS IDEAL CUT CDN stone SF1 F.This is where it gets confusing. I asked him to show her a .7 to see wat she thought of it. Well she wants a .50 cuz she thinks the .70 is TOOO BIG. I personally think the .50 is TOO SMALL. Do you guys have any suggestions as too wat i do. i think .50 is too small but she seems to be happy with it. I know its her choice and all but i cant see myself giving her a .50. Any thoughts would be great. |

A lot would depend on the setting. In a thin band with plain setting (especially a small ring size), maybe she likes the way a .5 looks. I'm sure she would be very happy with a .778 though and it sounds like you';d be happier with that too.

i should tell you she is just over 5 feet tall and has ring size of 6.5. she like very simple and elegant things. we are considering a 3mm white gold tiffany style 4 prong setting. i attached a pic but dont know if it got uploaded.![]()

While (of course) your opinion does matter, ultimately, she's the one that has to wear it. I don't like big rocks, either, and on my hand I think a .5 looks just right. If she's anything like me, she probably thinks a big diamond will get caught on everything and scratch everything and just generally be a big bother. If she's not used to wearing rings, this is very likely!Don't worry, once she gets the .5 and gets used to it, she'll probably be very happy to upgrade to a larger stone. In the meantime, why don't you stick with what she wants, and instead spend your money on getting her the best .5 you can afford? I think she would appreciate that much more than a stone she's uncomfortable wearing.

very good point goldengirl. she wears one ring and i got her that 10 yrs ago. its a .05 if that . we were 17 and we had been together for 1 yr. I guess she is just not used to a big stone.

Hey~No worries, my ring size is a 4.5-I am 5'3 and I have a .52 CT diamond, it does tend to look bigger on smaller hands and depends on the band my mom had the exact one but her band was FAT well like a 7mm or so and her hands are small but it made the diamond look tiny! So simple elegance like you said, that's perfect! Maybe you could get her mom's opinion or your moms heheheee...they like to get involved in that stuff too g'luck!

I'm just going to throw this out there for the heck of it. Is it possible she doesn't want bigger than .5x because of price? I know my g/f steered away from higher priced diamonds when we went looking around town. I think she would have loved bigger, but didn't want me to break the bank to do it? Again, just a thought, not necessarily revelant in your situation.

My girlfriend did not want a big stone either. She looked at a 1ct and thought that was way too huge. So I pointed her towards a 0.7ct, and she sort of grimaced and said maybe. So I bought a 0.62ct for her and she's really happy with it. She wears it proudly everyday. Another thing about really well cut stones with excellent light return... they look bigger. ![]() Why don't you settle for something under a 0.7, but not quite 0.5ct? That would be a good compromise, wouldn't it? |

My wife thought her diamond was very large when we got it. 12 years later she says it must of shrunk over the years because it looks so small now. Good luck.

thanks for the suggestions. her g/f told me she really likes a wedding band that they saw. but it is like $1500. My g/f is in the medical profession so she prolly wont be able to wear the ring all the time. so the in the end she'll still have some bling wen the ering is in hiding. So i guess we both win. YAY.
