after someone posts a ring on "show me the ring," responses always seem to postitive (e.g. "great ring," "love it," "wow!," etc.). does anyone ever say that they really don't like the ring? i know diamond rings, esp. e-rings, can be touchy subjects, and most of the postings are nice, but sometimes i think "why on earth did you spend money on that -- what were you thinking?" comments?

keyword search "ugly"
then select the good, the bad and the ugly thread.
You'll have some laughs.

Doesn't it come down to personal taste? For example, I know certain people on this forum don't particularly like tension settings. I happen to love them. When I posted pics of my ring, I got lots of nice comments, even some from people who admitted it wasn't "their style." Also, I think some people chose not to comment rather than say something negative. I don't expect everyone to like what I like, nor do I like everything else I see. However, I really have liked most of what I see here on PS, even if I'd never wear it myself -I think it makes a big difference when things are made or chosen with great effort and care. That shines through, even if it's not a design I'd have chosen myself. I've seen people step right up to critique a poor performing diamond in hopes of saving someone from disappointment, but it's different to slam someone's carefully picked out or even custom designed piece of jewelry just because it doesn't happen to be the type of thing you like. Then again, some things are pretty undeniably ugly -just look at the "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" thread!!!

I like to adhere to the "if you can't say anything nice..." rule especially when it comes to someone else's treasured engagement ring. Why post that you find someone else's jewelry ugly? That can only lead to anger or hurt feelings and I hope we are all sensitive enough around here to try to avoid that sort of thing. The Show Me the Ring forum is a show and tell for the owner, not a forum to criticize the ring by others.

I agree. I think if someone doesn't like something, they just wouldn't say anything.

Q it's not that i don't like tension settings, it's just that i get nervous, seem like you can lose a stone very easily.(maybe just in my head) my wife's has one solitaire in a 6 prong and one in a 4 prong. i always get nervous with those 4 prong settings. i always wonder if one prong breaks, will the stone fall out. it is always harder to find a "mind clean" stone than a eye clean stone. |

There's a lot of styles that I wouldn't wear for love or money...but I'd never say so to someone who had chosen with care and wore it with love. It's just poor taste. ![]() Giving advice to someone considering a stone is much different than critiquing one that has already been bought.

While I have my personal favorites and preferences, I truly do think most people's rings and diamonds are beautiful--how can a diamndn, especially one given or gotten to celebrate love or committment--be "ugly"? Plus, I really appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into many of the custom styles we see here. Someone mentioned the "Good, Bad Ugly..." thread and I really believe that thread was started in good fun and the clever & creative names people came up with for the designs were the best part for me...I will venture to say that a few of the pieces with horrible gray or cloudy diamonds were truly ugly...hey, I have a couple of style doozies from the 80s in my jewelery box that are pretty weird but I even still sport them once in a while! Jewelry should be fun...life is too stressful in many other ways than to stress about rings!
