We are looking at emerald cut diamonds. Although we are looking at good size stones - 2 to 2.5 carats - they do not seem as large as similar sized stones of other cuts. We saw a 2.38 carat emerald cut that looked good size, and was more square and less elongated (9.02 x 6.64 x 4.47 mm). Although we liked its look in the store, we are concerned that it had an apparently very-high table percentage (78%). Also, it was certified, but by "Nat'l Gemological Laboratories", which I have not heard of (we saw it in a chain jewelry store). Q 1) Is the table too high ? 2)is the high table percentage what makes it look large? 3) should we care, or will we be disappointed when we have had it for a while 4) what about this certification? THANKS |

You can probably find a nicer emerald cut. Buy a diamond with a GIA cert. and/or send it to an independent appraiser. Don't buy a diamond with the cert you mentioned unless there is a clear return policy, in writing, that meets your needs of ability to return pending evaluation by an independent appraiser. There are lots of diamonds out there. Buy a really beautiful one from a better source. The cut will make the diamond beautiful and you will be disappointed every day by a poorly cut stone, especially when you see it out of the jewelry store lighting.
