Help - I'm living in Australia and my Aussie boyfriend and I are looking at Princess cut diamonds. Although some diamonds have GIA certs this one has a DCLA (australia Lab). Can anyone help me determine if this is a quality diamond ? Weight 1.63 Color F Clarity VS2 length 6.73mm width: 6.44mm L/W ratio 1.05 Depth : 68.5% Pavil Depth: 54.2% Pavil Angle: 59.14 (?, I think) Crown Height: 9.8% Table: 71.7% Girdle Thickness: 2.2% Finish Grade: Very Good Flourensence NIL Hue: NIL NOt sure if it's too shallow or proportions are OK. Thanks for the response. I was actually just looking to gain some advice on the proportions of the diamond and if they fall into the range of a good cut. I have not purchased the diamond yet - still doing research on the princess cut diamonds. This is one that we were interested in. Thanks !! Eileen flanagan |

Princess stones where the table is greater than the depth (in this case by 3.2%) give me cause for concern. It doesn't necessarily mean that is will be too shallow or produce poor light return, but it is a cuase for concern. Also, does your report provide a Symmetry grade? And, what is the price? Jay

The best you can do is enter it into Dave Atlas's calculator at the DIY section But this is a guide only - there are too many variables to be able to "grade" a fancy cut by #'s. Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |

Nothing on the report about Symentry. The report is from DCLA (Diamond certification Labatory of Australia) From speaking with the Jewler the Finishing grage - VERY GOOD, is a look at both the polish and symentry. The diamond did look good with small inclusions visible only with the loop (two on the bottom ). The cost that we were quoted was $16,200 AUD which is about $11,500 USD. We are (were) seriously considering this diamond but I'm wondering if we should let this one go. It was nice to look at but I'm no concerned about the table / depth issue. Thanks again all !!! i'm not 100% sure about the price but it seems kinda high. i won't know until tues when i get back to work. i have the diamond list. as i remember seeing, a D VS2 1.55 goes for about 10,500 USD.

I can't tell from your last response if you are or aren't worried about the depth/table issue...?...If you are, like Garry said, there is NO way to know until you view the ideal scope image (or even a Bscope)... It is impossible to know for sure without that info.

Sorry about the last response it was supposed to read I am NOW concerned about the table / depth issue. From what I can tell from looking at diamonds here in Sydney they ALL tend to be higher priced than what I could get in the states. The price diffrences between stones all tend to be about the same as what I am seeing online but the price / ct is just that much higher here in Sydney. The stone did look really nice and my SO is very much excited about the stone but I just want to make sure that he is not getting "ripped" off since he's shelling out the cash. We are both a little leary about buying via the internet and the cost of an airline ticket back to the states will make up the differnce!! I'm very much comfortable with how it looks but if we could get a stone THAT much nicer for around the same price or should we negotiate further with the Jewler. I am just a consumer but what you are requiring here is an independent appraiser. If you are too far from Garry H (Cut Nut) then maybe you could contact him and he would know of a reputable firm in the Sydney area. The Ideal Scope which is always mentioned on these boards by people looking at stones was infact invented by Garry H (Cut Nut). Have you looked at Dave Atlas table yet for princess which Garry posted a link too. Dave Atlas is also an independent well know appraiser in America so he knows what he is talking about.

Eileen, I was looking for a princess cut stone in australia, but ended up getting one in from overseas as it met my requirements better than the ones the local places had at the time. If you do improt it, you will only be liable for the GST at customs as loose diamons attract no duty! However, it is worth looking at www.diamondexchange.com.au and www.diamondsandopals.com to get an idea of online prices over here (when looking at them, you can often find the same stone on the pricescope 'price comparison' charts- and can work out where the best deal can be had). When looking through the stones available, you are best to follow dave atlas's charts to help narrow the range- a top rating doesn't guarantee a top light return, but you are less likely to find a dog of a stone if the general proportions are all looking good. Once you have found a stone you like the look of, you need to sither see it in person or you need to get an objective idea of its light perfomance- as everyone says, the numbers alone don't tell the whole story with fancy cut diamonds. One option is to get a full "3-D" Sarin Scan(not the basic Sarin scan). This data can then be fed into the "diamond-calc" tool that many pricescope users have access to, to give a much btter idea of the light performance of the princess cut. In Australia, DCLA , melbourne diamond exchange and Garry's Precious Metals shop in Melbourne all have Sarin machines (there may be more, but this is all I know of).A number of the online retailers in teh US have taccess to sarins too- however this option does involve a bit of stuffin around as stones are sent to labe etc, and then you need to get a nice person on Pricescope to run the numbers. The (easier) second option is to get an idealscope/firecope light return image of the stone- which will also give information on the light return performance (the diamond calc is effectively a virtual idealscope image). Most USA dealers have these, and I think Melbourne Diamond exchange does too. If it all looks good, then you can order the stone and have a look with your own eyes- which should be the final arbiter on whether you keep the stone or return it within the refund period. good luck- have fun. mm

mm, Thanks so much for the advice and efforts. I will definately obtain a idealscope/firecope light return image of the stone. We both like the diamond but I just want to make sure we are getting something that we feel comfortable with both from a value standpoint but also from an "emotional" aspect. After reading posts on pricescope I was just getting concerned about the table being bigger than the depth and was starting to worry that maybe this diamond is not what we want BUT the more that I read it really depends on seeing the diamond, which we have and both like. Forgot to mention - I am from the state so although the price does inclue GST (10%) I will get that back when I leave the country for a holiday -that savings alone is basically the cost of setting !!! (Maybe more diamonds on the setting !!) - Eileen (Originally from NY USA !!) Eileen flanagan |

if you can see the stone in person- just buy an idealscope from Garry Holloway (Cut Nut) fo about $30 US I think, and do the test yourself- easy to do. It will answer your questiosn pretty quickly. cheers mm
