Here is another option in our search for an Asscher: 1.52 I VS1 66% depth 51% table I'm going to see it tonight, but wanted to get some other opinions on the depth/table #'s. Thanks in advance! tv77

Just wanted to post an update: Went to look at it last night, and it didn't really look like an asscher - the proportions seemed *off*. It looked more square/emerald-ish. Also, when I saw the cert, it said the stone had a medium blue flourescence, which while there is nothing wrong with that, it's not what we're looking for. We're still looking..... tv77

So... is any of the two below an 'Asscher cut' to you ? ![]() It does help to see what you buy first. These two guys could have the same darn numbers on their GIA certs! Table and depth does not say much at all... A 51% table sounds good and could well belong to a branded Royal Asscher, but just that number does not tell allot, as you could see. I thought Asscher was just a brand name for a square emerald cut. Did I miss something somewhere?

Based on looks alone, the one on the right is the style I'm more drawn to. I've read on pricescope the differences between "royal asscher" and what people today are calling "asscher", and I know there are differences. So when I said the one I saw yesterday looked more "emerald-ish", I meant it looks more like the picture on the left than on the right. We've looked at 6 so far, and 3 looked more like the pic on the left, while the other 3 looked more like the pic on the right. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference, and making sure you see it in person vs. just reading the #'s. ![]()

---------------- A branded asscher looks much closer to the right picture, and only some non-branded pieces have the same profile. The facet pattern of the RA is somewhat different (some extra steps) as well - quite visble on larger stones and a bit less so around 1 ct. They do care to show a profile of the cut on the RA website. Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |

the stone on the right is a what would be described as an asscher. the stone on the left is a square emerald cut. branded asschers typically are called octagonal step cuts by gia....a non branded stone could go either way...get either a square emerald cut or octagonal step cut for shape and cutting style. that is why seeing these stones is critical.

Many jewelers are calling square emeralds asschers because asschers are hot right now. Many so-called asschers really look nothing like a proper asscher.

I am looking for an asscher eternity band using .33 stones. Can I get an asscher that small that looks more like the stone on the right? I have looked all over the NYC diamond district and seem to only see stones that look like the one on the left?

---------------- At times, the octagonal "type" is described as "russian cut". This is just another unreliable trade name, but you could try to ask for such things, I suppose. Stuller uses the term to classify it's stock, for example. There might be other supiers using it for this type of stones as well. I would think that the corners of the little diamonds will really get hidden by prongs though - unless you have a channel setting in mind. For some reason, your post reminded me of the Lucida band. Did you see those? Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |

These are done by Daniel K... and do not use RA stones. Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |

The lovely Daniel K rings shown are using the same type of smaller square emerald cuts shown in the band I've attached- the stones here are 1/4's![]() In my experience, finding square emerald cuts under about 1/2 carat with larger corners is just about impossible. To TV- the smaller table sizes can be very attractive on this type of stone. Also- I actually prefer an I, J or K color with medium blue flourescence- many times this can improve the look of stones in this color range. David |
