As a newbie, I've read again and again on the need to use an independent appriaser.
There are many forum posts on various aspects of using an appriaser but no comprehensive set of recommendations in the FAQ. The below link does a great job of convincing me to use one but doesn't go deep into what to expect and which questions to ask.
Would PriceScope please consider creating an FAQ on finding and using an appraiser:
- When you can't use a PS appraiser, how to pick a local appraiser?
- what questions should I ask?
- what tests should an appraiser do and what equipment should they have?
- what info should be included in their report?
- example report?
- etc.?
This is so important and such a frequent topic, I thought it deserved a place in the FAQ

strmrdr- I know those threads are good and cover the topic well, but I think dazzed makes a good point about somehow incorporating more info into the FAQ. It would also save the appraisers on the forum from answering the same kinds of questions time and again... quaeritur |

BUMP
Leonid,
I love your site but still think it needs a good FAQ on using an independent appraiser. The appraiser is the key that makes buying on PS safe and secure.
My own experience was a little disappointing. The appriasal:
- confirmed the stone matched the cert
![]() - provided a report with a plot and a poor pic of the stone
- appriased the stone at twice my purchase price even after I questioned the figure.
All together the appraisal did confirm I wasn't being ripped off (stone matched cert) and was not expensive (60$). However, I wonder if I should have asked for more input, and I would have happily paid more if I knew what to ask the appriaser
![]() Are there any appraiser horror stories out there to share
