Does anyone know who the most reliable/trustworthy of the jewellers on Sansom St. in Philly are? I would prefer not to have to go into every shop to try to figure it out. I stopped into two shops the other day and found that they were quite different - one a hard sell approach with the guy bragging about his inventory, the other was practically a mom-and-pop operation. I am looking for a GIA certified, 3/4 carat diamond on a relatively simple setting with two side sapphires. I will be happy (and so will Lisa) with a VSI/SI near colorless stone.

Are you opposed to shopping online? Have you given consideration to cut quality? Although I live in Allentown, I don't know much about Philly jewelers.

Yes - I am opposed to buying online. I would like to see and touch what I'm buying before I pay for it. For this type of purchase, at least.

I went to school in Philly... unfortunately, it was before my diamond addiction, so I can't help you with Sansom St. jewelers. You might want to post a thread with a name like "Recommendations for jewelers in Philadelphia?" to get more suggestions. Not to push the online purchase option (many here prefer it because it saves money and some online vendors provide way more info than local stores on the diamonds), but most reputable online vendors will ship the stone to an independent appraiser near you where you can inspect it before deciding to buy. It's an excellent way to see what you are buying before putting any money down. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an option. ![]() Good luck! quaeritur |

Wonka, you are from Allentown, have you ever been to the jeweler on the corner of Cedar Crest and Hamilton Blvd? I forget what it is called but always wonder about it, I am from the Allentown area too. I am looking into getting my ring reset, any good custom jewelers in Allentown? I am also looking into Samsom Street, a friend dealt w/ Barsky Jewelers and really liked them and I have had contact w/ Harry Merill and they seem nice.

My firm is right in the middle of all this. I have friends, acquantainces and some who just don't like us all within shouting distance. We don't recommend, but we will tell you to avoid pushy salespeople. We tell folks not to be dragged in off the street as if you were attending a carnival. We like to see people find places that have AGA-CERTs from us, or GIA papers, or AGS papers. You can also get a fine deal with EGL reports, but don't get hung up on the letters of the alphabet when it comes to color. buy what you like, not based on a letter and closed eyes. Of course, nearly any diamond can be delivered to us for an appraisal or verification before you agree to buy it. If you have doubts, then you can buy from anyone around here by that method. Happy hunting. David S. Atlas |

You have an awesome reasource with Dave Atlas and his crew nearby. You could likely save a lot of money and get a better diamond buying from one of the recomended PS vendors and having it sent to his office to look at. A lot of the vendors will send the stone to him with you only paying shipping and for the appraisal if you end up returning it. If you like it after seeing it you would then pay for it and pick it up at the appraisers when the money transfer is completed. ........... I can't remember the PS rules on recommendations (and can't find them...can someone show me where they are listed?) so I'll just tell you our story that might help...and hopefully it will be acceptable. EDIT: I know you mentioned Sansom, but I thought this still might help. We bought our ring and will buy our future wedding bands/jewelry from Robbins at 8th and Walnut. (Let me clarify that the final purchase was made at their Delaware Store - no tax - saved us $$) Anyway, we live in Atlanta and I can't stress enough how it was soooo worth our trip(s) up to Philly to make the purchase. The money we saved is unbelievable (we looked around for many months). They are very nice to deal with - we had a wonderful experience. Our stone is AGA cert. (extremely satisfied - thank you Dave)- worth your consideration. You have the source right here wink, wink Dave Atlas

i agree..if you are set on purchasing from a B&M in your area..you are lucky to have AGA right there to independently appraise it after.. Go and purchase where you feel comfortable (with a guarentee of return if all does not pan our well after appraisal) and have it appraised at AGA> They are fantastic!

---------------- A very, very good custom jeweler is Feldman Designs, located at the end of Cedar Crest Blvd. and Chestnut St. (pretty much in Emmaus). It's across the street from the gorcery store in the strip mall. They do an extremely nice job and everytime I went in there I dealt directly with the owner, Kurt, and he made me feel like I was his only customer. Their prices were very good too, compared to some of the other jewelry stores I visited in the area. I would definitely recommend them anytime. The website is www.feldmanjewelry.com

I just bought my girlfriend's engagement ring from them. The center stone is a .70 CT square emerald cut (Asscher type), F color, VS2 clarity. Then I got two small princess cut sidestones (.16 CT each), E-F color, VS2 clarity. These were all set in a platinum ring. When I initially checked around for this type of stone I went to a couple other places and told them what I was looking for. Well, Kurt at Feldman called me back about 2 hours after I went in to his store to let me know that he located something. It so happens that when I went in to see the stone it was incredible and I ended up putting a deposit on it and this is the one in the ring! Not to mention it was a significantly better price than some of the other "comparible" stones at other jewelers The other jewelry places finally called me back about a month or so after my initial visit. I still went to check out some of their findings and they definitely weren't as nice...even though the specs showed better clarity, etc.

Johnny, was the ring a custom setting that you designed or was it something you found in their store?

The setting I bought was found from a vendor that Feldman Designs deals with. I showed him some pics of what I wanted and he found something that I liked. They do, and definitely would have, made a custom setting for me. I just went the route I did because the custom setting would've been a little more money and it wouldn't have been too different from the one I got.
