We have around 8k to spend, for the entire ring. We would like to buy a set for me (w/ matching band). I tend to like white gold and what a "wide" look on my size 7 finger, so it looks like a flash of sparkle on the hand. There is a setting i liked but it was around 2500-just for the ring and was debating over spending such a small fortune on the setting vs the diamond. Maybe i could go up in size or color for that extra 2000?
How would you budget this money??

Since I like plainer settings usually Id say a simple 6 prong platinum (less upkeep but higher upfront price) or white gold (not white without rhodium plating, cheaper upfront price but more expensive in the long run due to upkeep) solitaire. Maybe just over a carat G/VS2 round or maybe pear shaped stone. Maybe you can find a less expensive paved or half pave band for your solitaire and not go up too far in price.

Personally Id spend more on the diamond and much less on the setting.

I am predicating my reply on my sense from your post that you want a diamond that will look substantial on your finger.

I have a size 7.5 finger and personally, I'd get the biggest and best quality diamond with that 8K--which is very possible especially if you go for a well-cut stone through some of the vendors here (unless you have a local guy you trust). You can get a substantial setting that looks appropriate without spending $2,500, which will take a chunk out of your stone budget.

Go for G/H and a cean SI1--it's worth the effort to look for these stones because the savings are incredible--you can spend your money on size, cut and color--the effects of which which the naked eye will see first. I just bought an SI2 stone that someone asked if it was an "IF" b/c she couldn't see anything (then she snapped to reality and figured an IF would be a gazillion dollars so it must be a lower clarity )... Go for the cut and the size you want and spend the time to learn here...then hunt for that perfect stone--it's out there!

I will second that~!I would spend less on the setting and more on your diamond. You can find a gorgeous simple setting for the remainder of your budget.

You can do extremely well by looking at even as low as a J in color if you are purchasing a round brilliant. I just purchased a J marquise and it faces up white. There are several people on this forum who have purchased J rounds and are thrilled they did not get a G color stone. Look around, check in with some vendors and yes, go for SI1 eye-clean by all means. You should be able to make that $8,000 go a long way and still be able to get a setting that knocks your socks off.
