Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind right now so I thought I would turn to you fine folks for some help. I am planning to buy and engagement ring in the next month or so. I am planning to get a Jubilee diamond in the .56 to .65 range, but I do not know what setting I want. I had initially wanted to go with the x-prong from vatche, but while shopping with my girlfriend we ran into a jeweler that had the x-prong settings and she had less than a positive response to them. She liked them, but was not crazy about them. It may have been because they were in the case without a diamond, but nevertheless if has made me think that is not the right way to go. The problem that she has is that she wants something very secure and not to large. She likes that slim elegant look, but still wants some uniqueness to the setting. She really loves the antique looking settings, but again it has to be a smaller setting. She has petite hands so anything too big looks overbearing. Can anyone suggest a setting or designer that has a variety of rings that may fit her needs and look good with a Jubilee? We did find some settings by Scott Kay that she liked, but nothing she was crazy about. I look forward to reading your responses.

Try www.antiqueengagementrings.com They have lots of choices and reasonable prices, and many of their settings are very delicate.

Someone pointed this out to me and now I post it all the time because I love it. If she likes an antique look she may like it too--It's unique and also very delicate. Do you have any more specific idea of the type of setting your GF might like (i.e, gold/white gold/platinum, plain, pave, channelset, side stones--anything?) Hey there, www.faycullen.com has a large (approx 120) selection of settings, and many with the choice of white gold or platinum. They have many antique looking settings. I have purchased from them before and they were a pleasure to deal with. I wish you well, Bridget Pterodactyls rule. Except for the whole being extinct thing. |

Sorry, I should have included more info for you. She likes Platinum or White Gold. She would prefer something that is on the plain side, but some tasteful side stones are very nice as well. Basically, nothing that is very big or cluttered with sidestones. She prefers a band that is more on the slim side. She has showed interest in both channelset and pave. I think the main thing is that the overall presence of the ring is not too overbearing. I have seen many beautiful rings in my searches, but they would not fit her that well. She does not like anything that is set really high of the finger or has high prongs. In the same respect she does not care for half bezels either. I hope this gives a little more of an idea. Thanks to those of you who have posted already, I will be looking at your selections.

Did you end up with that .56 F VS2 Jubilee? What didn't your GF like about the x-prong? The prongs? The band? Too high or low?

To all, thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming, I am busy researching several of them as we speak. EP, I have not purchased anything yet, but as long as it is there I will most likely go with the .56 Jub. I would of course like to get something a lot bigger, but the budget only goes so far. As far as the x-prong, she liked it, but not in the way that I would hope for in an engagement ring. It was more like a, "yeah that's really nice" instead of a wow that is a beautiful ring like some of the other settings we saw. I think that seeing it without a stone set in it didn't help her image of it because it is pretty plain without a stone set in it. The x-prong is not totally ruled out, but it is not as high on the list anymore. On a side note does anyone know anything about www.antiqueengagementrings.com, has anyone done business with them? After getting the suggestion from ChooChoo(thanks) I checked them out and they have some nice settings and I sent them an email for some info, but have yet to hear back from them?? I also like some of the other suggestions people have made, like the one Noobie had done, that was stunning, I am just curious as to weather it would be out of my budget range. I hate to base a thing like this on money, but reality is what it is. I am very gracious to all of you for the wonderful suggestions.

I think most of us on PS are aware that Jubilee is a trade name for that squarish cut and there is a mark up for that. However the mark is minimal compared to a comparable top notch H&A round brilliant diamond.

Thanks for the heads up yowahking, but yes I am aware that Jubilee is a trade name. As far as the markup, that is no new news either seeing as every piece of jewelery out on the market has a lofty markup, whether it be diamond rings or gold chains. Its all part of the game.

Just that you do not have to always pay for the extra markup. Like H&A stones that had H&A long before anyone noticed. You don't have to pay extra for it like buying them from a "hearts on fire" brand. Most top cut diamond in rounds will have the effect, some better than others. The one I will pay a little more for is a true Radiant which is a patented cut, over what 90% of the market calls a radiant which is often a doctored up emerald cut or a repair cut on a broken princess cut.

yowahking, We are also aware that the jubilee cut is patented and that gog is the only vendor that at this time can advertise it online. While your point on h&a is well taken it doesn’t apply in this case. I often wonder which came first all the studies to prove h&a is the best or the idea that it actually means something. Ie: was it noticed that diamonds with it performed better and studies were done or was it marketed as a gimmick then the studies were done to support the gimmick? :} As matter of fact im starting a new thread for the last question :} ........... yowahking, if you have any suggestions for me please feel free to give them, I have not purchased anything at this time. I am open to take a little time to research any suggestion, including the stone type, but my main objective of this post was to get suggestions and info on settings for a stone, not the stone itself. However, I do appreciate your thoughts and advice along with the thoughts and advice of everyone else that has participated thus far.
