What is the most important factor in choosing pear shape diamond pierce? I always put high priority on color. If I can not afford (or can not find) D or E color, is F color OK enough to appreciate sparks or color of the stone reflection in the mirror (or for my husband sitting in front of me over the table?) How far lower clarity I can go... (it is not RB, so I do not know).

What is a diamond pierce? Do you just mean a loose diamond? When choosing a pear shaped diamond, cut is the most important factor. When you have a great cut you can drop in color to about an "H" or a REALLY good "I" without seeing any yellow tint as long as you stay below about 3 carats. The sparks of color you mentioned are known as fire (the play of light across the diamond is scintillation), and are a direct result of the crown of the diamond--not the color. As for clarity, you can go down to an SI1 as long as it's completely eye clean. Look for a stone that does not have any inclusions directly under the table and make sure they're not black inclusions or anything Hope this helps!

The PS forum members are going to shoot me, but it is my opinion that the outline (or shape appeal as they call it in the GIA diamond grading class) is the most important consideration when chosing a pear. Otherwise you would be buying a RB instead. Is the outline pleasing to the eye, is it even, is the head pleasingly rounded, are the shoulders gently but distinctly and evenly rounded, do the wings or sides curve in attractive arches? In other words, does it look more like a teardrop (more desirable) or a trillion (less desirable). After that, I would consider the cut parameters which can be found on the AGA cut charts for a pear. Pay attention to the length to width ratio which is something not considered in RBs. Also stay away from stones with a dark bow-tie. Color is a subjective thing. Some like the icy white of a D-E, others the warmness of an I-J. Pears may show more color in their tips, so the same considerations for color in a RB also apply for a pear but maybe more so. Clarity considerations for a pear are the same as RB (not like ECs). In my opinion, SI1 or better. Websailor posted my pear on SMTR

Hi, Researcher & Cflutist. Thank you very my for your advise. Yes, cut & shape for fire! I will put that in mind for my diamond search. (I meant piereced earings,,,, In Japan, people call it pierce--pi-a-su.)
