I have a question regarding getting an independent third party appraisal. I have read that it is a wise thing to do. The diamond we bought is GIA certified. The jeweler we bought the ring from provided us with an appraisal. Isn't that good enough for our insurance company? What is the benefit of paying nearly $100 for an independent appraisal? The peace of mind knowing that the diamond we THOUGHT we purchased was in fact the diamond we indeed purchased?? Thanks. ![]() Susann Susann L. Cobb |

The independent can verify that what you received is a genuine diamond, that it matches its cert, and also give you some feel for what you should be paying. After awhile, you'll come to trust a particular jeweler and find this extra step isn't necessary except for very expensive gems. If you're buying from somebody you know nothing about, then the independent is always a good idea. |

Many independent appraisers will, for a much smaller fee, simply verify that the diamond you have matches the diamond in the cert. That might be a good option for you.

Yep, I just had a "verification appraisal". Cost me $35 for a half hour of her time. She was an independant appraiser, btw.

My diamond is "etched" with the GIA number. As long as the number matches the cert., so you think there is there a reason to have it independently verified?

That piece of mind was worth it to me. And, I paid more for my appraisal. Two other things. The appraisal may be an opportunity to double check the actual goodness of the stone, or so it seems to me. For example, if your appraiser can double check the crown & pavillion angles, you may have an opportunity to confirm or deny the actual goodness of the cut of your stone. Also, depending on the kind of insurance you want to get, if the appraisal that comes with your ring is, as usual, higher than it needs to be, your annual premium can be lowered marginally by getting an appraisal that "more" closely represents the replacement value of the diamond. So, just a couple of thoughts. Ira (Ruffles have Ridges) Z. |

Banshee13, It's quite possible that you don't need a 3rd part appraisal. There are three primary reasons that I see clients with new merchandise. First, they want conformation that they have recieved what was promised and expected in the sale. This includes both the quality of the diamond and the workmanship of the jewelry. Second, they want to have documentation, or more precise documentation in order to bind an insurance policy. And third, they would like to have more information about thier purchase than was made available from the dealer. It doesn't sound like any of these apply to your situation. Insurance companies will normally accept anything you give them before binding a policy. If you use the documents supplied by the jeweler, make sure that they are sufficiently clear in their description that a satisfactory replacement will be possible based soley on the contents of this report.
